Been studying abrasive particle size. Found out that it is legal to sell abrasives w/a mix of particle sizes. FEPA (Federation of European Producers of Abrasives) allows a range of particles to be sold under one size designation. Many standards exist. You get what you pay for in terms of purity of particle size.
Some applications require extreme purity like sanding turbine blades and helicopter rotors where a few oversized particles can cause a crack. In those cases the abrasive may be screened many times and have to pass thru laser measurement systems. Any abrasive used on such parts has to be documented since life support is at risk.
FEPA is a common standard and allows a fair variation in particle size, and is considered fairly strict.
As far as Lortone selling what they call a pre polish, their range of particle sizes is a bit wide but close to normal. I did not intend on bashing their product, just stating that it is a range. It may only have 1% 325 particles and 99% 500 particles or most likely a range of particles in different % categories.
Have your abrasive supplier give you a chart that shows the range of % particle sizes in their abrasive if it concerns you.
