Wife buys old vases from thrift stores. The old ones are usually colored red with gold, so that glass is rarely being made anymore. Most modern stuff is coated red somehow, sandpaper will reveal a coating. Been reusing the glass filler, adding color along the way. before Hammer treated, red white and blue, about to be added to agate in middle of course grind

jamesp, does the Mrs. know what you did to her vases? Just kidding with you. Sure will make some pretty filler. Does she have any of the carnival glass? It's really pretty, too.

All ya got to say is 'honey, will ya go shopping for some purity glass vases' and the rest will take care of itself Jan. Will do carnival too, red is a fav, so red for now. Proud of the glass filler. Makes me feel like i am tumbling gemstones off the virgin beaches of Sri Lanka. sick eh?

jamesp, are you tumbling Ceylon sapphires? Beautiful color change garnet and some of the finest hessonite garnet were found there.

James B Will run sharp glass for 2 clean outs in rough, set it aside, and run more sharp glass for two more coarse grit changes- on and on. But the last batch of glass gets run all the way to polish. Smooth filler/smooth rocks, not sure if it matters, but that's my way.

I also have been running some batches with glass. I even went to the store to buy some colored glass bottles . Blues stay blue but the red ones turn white. Now I will have to wait until the spring for garage sale seasons.

You can look thru the bottom while backlit and often see scratches where the red coating was scratched off. Apparently it takes a good bit of gold, cause they don't do that much anymore.

I've been taking notes and collecting glass, when I get that LotO going again in warm weather I am going to try some. Not much red in the pile yet, but there's always hope of a big find!

That's a pretty pile of hammer treated glass! Neighbor just gave me a baggie of sea glass he collected in Monterey. Some of the glass has been tumbled many times, it will all be round balls one day. Some people leave sea glass as is, some tumble it. The beaches below the bluffs in Italy of the Mediterranean are full of glass from hundreds of years.
