I do not usually mess with my system much but after reading some of the recent discussions about 500 grit SC vs 500 grit A/O I decided to take some pictures after an extended run in 500 grit A/O (from rock shed). This batch just went back in the loto for the polish stage so more pics in a few days. This is a mixed rock batch. after rotary these spent 24 hours in 120/220 then 4 days in 500 grit A/O a few lakers a few rhyolites from philSo does anyone have photos of rocks after 500 SC to make a comparison? Chuck, no one wants to compare rocks with you! Those look really good. If I had any 500 SC I'd run some rock in it for a comparison. I don't have my though.

Chuck I have no pics but I have used both. I think the 500 SC does better in the Loto. It starts a shine. The AO seems to disappear into a slurry and the shiny doesn't go as far. I use 220 for 3 days and 500 sc for two days and 1000 AO with a hint of AO polish for a day and then AO polish from ROCKSHED FOR 5 days.

Using 120/220 after the rotary makes good sense in the vibe. Getting a polish in 4 days using AO 500 is faster than my Viking will do. It is set on 1.0 for agate, .6 for obsidian, and can go up to 1.6 max. Probably could set it on 1.2 or 1.4 and get faster results on the agate. I ran SiC 220 in the vibe and had a pretty smooth finish after 3 days on obsidian. I have SiC 500 I could try, but still learning this thing. But that SiC is rotting away, had switched to AO 500 long ago in the rotary. orrum's recipe is close to mine, except I did AO 500 in rotary, then vibe AO 1000 for 4 days and Rock Shed polish for 2 days. After 4 days the AO 1000 is close to a fine polish and the Rock Shed polish was a mere touch-up. So 1000 for 4 and polish for 2 = 6 days, Bill was AO 1000 for 1 and polish for 5 = 6 days. interesting

I use a half teaspoon of 1000 AO James but the secret for me is a quarter teaspoon of AO polish in with the 1000 AO.

Fantastic rocks as always - I expect we will all be blinded when these are actually finished!

I kind of agree Scott. The improvement achieved by continuing with a run in 1000, polish and then burnish will be negligible. I could sell these right out of 500 grit at shows with no problem. I expected these results from my agates by the shine on phils rhyolite caught me off guard. Chuck

Winner!! Winner!! Chicken dinner!! 500grit AO way much cheaper than polish of any species!! Woot!! You sell tumbles? If it's not too personal, may I ask whet they sell for? Tumbles do not bring in a lot of income at shows but everyone loves them and they keep people at the booth for a good amount of time which can lead to other more lucrative sales. I always have a 12 pound tumbler running on our table to attract people and its a great conversation starter. www.etsy.com/shop/KiddRocksLapidary?section_id=12625336&ref=shopsection_leftnav_3Chuck
