As most of you know I pick up a lot of local rock that just does not fit the mold of common rock. Most of the rock around here is pushed in or washed in from somewhere else so even knowing the direction it came from is not possible. For an average rockhound like me anyway. The rock smart people might know but I am not into research like snowmom. Not even sure why or where I picked up this rock because it more than likely is just a piece of basalt with the voids filled in. The filled in part of this rock is what is interesting. Most of the semi clear areas are fortification agates on a very small scale. The largest one in this slab is one half inch long and it takes a 10X magnifier to see the fortifications. It is a pretty good sample of how the minerals have to move through the stone and fill the voids. The host rock is very porous. Not the greatest blow up but if you look close you can see the fortification/rings in the rock. If anyone else has similar rock/rocks feel free to post them so all can see. Opinions or knowledge are welcome. Jim

I can't offer any insight to the rock Jim, but you sure did a fine job polishing it. I would've thought that would undercut badly.

Very cool! We were on a cross country rockhounding trip one time and I stopped along the road to change drivers in eastern Arizona. There was whole outcrop of that basalt along the road. Just chock full of little agates and tiny quartz crystal filled geodes. Really interesting to look at.....Mel

Neat slab, @wampidy. Your rock would be considered an amygdaloidal basalt. If the basalt is as hard as the agate infill, and takes a good polish, consider yourself fortunate. The basalts I've found are really soft and only take a satin sheen at best.
