While slabs of tree trunks are nice, I really like the grain pattern of roots. A few years ago we were lucky and found an Oak root ball, some of it was black and some like this Golden. It is opalized and there for very brittle, but is workable.

You were right the first time. Almost all of Stinking is opalzied, not agate. Some of it it more brittle than others.

Woodman, I too am fascinated by pieces of pet wood that show lots of curvalinearity and grain, things I've called burl and hence potentially the same as what you call roots?? How would I know that it just was not curved grain around a knot. Once I see a that kind of complexity, I start thinking of creative ways to slice the piece of emphasize the complexity. I have a piece or two in the tumbler at present that I may try to share up when they come out for your response. Beautiful stuff you have here. Tom

Tom In the photos of roots that I have put on here I know they are because I dug them and the complete stump/ root ball was in place. I have a few pieces of wood with knots and the grain around them is curved and look great but it is just localized around the knot/limb. It is hard for me to describe it, but I would know instantly whether if it a knot or roots. Roots grow wherever the moisture in the ground leads them, never in a straight line. Would love to see your polished results!

I almost don't want to show you all this one! LOL. this is part of the same root ball as the others, It is amazing how different it is in just a few feet. You can see the fractures in it showing that it is opalized. this one is about football size but jusste a wee bit heavier!
