I made this bismuth crystal last week with a very different coloration than any I had ever made. All previous crystals had rather outgoing coloration's but this one appears rather suttle at first. It appears to be only silver in color while closer inspection it has little flashes of blue light that turns a redish violet color while the silver turns to a rich golden color. These conditions change as the light source change. I epoxied it to a back plate of 28gauge stainless steel. It is 2 5/16" wide X 1 1/4" height X 3/4" thick. I have found thru error silver does not like bismuth. If a small speck of bismuth adheres itself to a piece of sterling silver which is heated to soldering temperature a pit or void will disfigure a nice piece of silver very quickly.    39don |

39Don, that really pushes the creative envelope -- I love it. The piece will definitely attract attention.
Your decision to incorporate the backing color into the design is brilliant, I think. Elevating the bismuth so the 2 top crystals are silhouetted in outline is absolutely great. That's a fascinating piece!

Like Wampidy I really like fresh and creative jewelry approaches. If you don't like the word "brilliant," choose another superlative you feel more comfortable with. I still think it's a brilliant and insightful use of your chosen materials.

Humidity is too high all year round, and it certainly does not like body-contact with me at all.  The last piece I tried wearing, lasted under two days before becoming absolutely dull and lifeless.  Kirk, your bismuth becomes dull? ?? What if you used a automotive clear coat to cover it before wearing and or mounting? ? I'll spray a few crystals and see what happens. Jim and Rick I like to think I'm sort of an artist with what I end up with in my cabbing and silversmithing as this necklace. I'm still wondering....lol This stainless steel backing I liked because it was light but very strong and polish's well. Another reason was it was easily attainable being a Street Rodder too having a stainless steel pile to pull from when fabricating parts for it. Thanks guys, 39don |

About 13 years ago, I wrapped some bismuth and it sold like friggin' hotcakes. I did some comparison pricing at the time and found no one else wrapping it and only a handful of people silver and gold smithing with it. The prices were as out of the world looking as the pieces!!!! Wow, was it expensive.... and that was then! You should get decent prices, too. Yours looks much more wearable than what I have seen. I know how delicate it can be.
