got no chance against Chucks Bruno...something to aspire to. In any case I have to cab to improve. Also have to work on the photography. [/p]
Your coming along just fine. You also use a a lot of self collected materials so extra points for that In my opinion there are three main elements to a great cabochon. The first is the equipment. It can be hard for someone just starting with minimal equipment to compete with others that have a full shop of goodies. The second thing is the material. Its easy to create breath taking cabs when you can afford or have access to breath taking slabs. The third thing is just experience. This part just takes some time. Chuck
Thanks for the vote of confidence Chuck. It is getting easier as I gather more of the tools of the trade. Now it's time to practice, practice, practice

I know I have been cabbing for about 2 1/2 yrs now and I still have some material that gives me fits... but you got to hang in there and it will come with time and practice.

This is a piece of Sicat plume agate I picked up at the PowWow in Quartzsite. It was a pricey slab so I was/am determined to make the absolute most out of it - even push the boundaries of sanity to create the uncreatable if that's even a word... Sicat plume agate from the N.Cadys Cabochon Backlit Surface

Thank you guys - when I started it I thought there was no way in heck it would stay together but it did obviously. As you can see from the last photo it was a "double dopper" just to be on the safe side haha.

That is way cool, Tommy! TommyLayOriginals, home of the DoubleDopper, lol!
First let me say that all the entries are great. We need more audience participation. Remember, it's not who wins, but playing the game that counts. Several more days left in the month, I'd like to see another half dozen cabs entered. Could you do that?
I've had a valid excuse for not doing it sooner. I've been going through a stretch of bad luck lately, feels like I am living out someone's Country/Western song. Goes something like this-
Well, my pick-em-up truck died, and my dog is sick... (Better that way than the other way around.)
'Bout time I got smart, quit asking,"What's next?" Instead, say "Uncle!" and "I've had enough!!"
Next day a traffic ticket, an infraction, you say? Damn those California stops, and motorcycle cops,
Just sittin' there waiting with a smile on his toad-like face. Wonder what this one's gonna cost me? Can you say traffic school?
And so it goes... No one said it has to rhyme, lol. If I work on it a little, maybe I can improve it some. Not too bad for a quicky.
Truck is fixed,Lucy is finally getting better. (Do NOT let them eat grass and grass seeds, it can cause $4K worth of problems!)
Okay, y'all have incited me to post an entry. Here goes nothing (literally)!
This is a cab I picked up in Quartzsite last month. Probably paid fitty-cent for it, either at the PowWow, or Tyson Wells. What is it, you ask? Some kind of rhyolite, Wonderstone, something like that. Don't know where it's from, I tole ya I got it at Quartzsite, lol.
The slabette, the one cab wonder, before I "fixed" it.
And four shots of the finished cab. I think it took a pretty good polish.
As Porky Pig says, "That's all, folks!"

I did indeed get that stone cut the same day I committed myself to Just lagged in posting! Here it is, decent full spectrum Labradorite material with a strong orange and purple. I was unable to capture the actual color change, but this material does exhibit a true color change, pretty fun stuff to cut. Slab: Pre Form: Cab: Thanks, Carleton

Wow, these are all outstanding cabs entered for February's contest!! The Dad_Ohs, Wow, your cab looks like it is faceted! Thats kind of what I was going for due to one of the corners was cracked and broke during the rough grinding phase, so I tried to copy the copy to the rest of the corners and then brought the flat up and across both sides to make it look even. It's my 1st time using this material. glad you like it

Wow, Carlton, I love the purple stuff. Can you give me any pointers on cutting and polishing that stuff? and Orrum... and anyone else! Just send me an email and I can start by linking you guys some unlisted videos talking about cutting and orientation. The website also has a pretty rough and fairly old tip page on how to cut as well: www.labradoritesandgems.com/How_to_cut_labradorite.html I REALLY need to update that. But I would be more than happy sharing all and any tips or "secrets", just shoot me an email (PM's work too, but I am a bit hit and miss) Carleton
