I managed to snag one of his pieces too. The color in my photo is just a bit off. It is a shade darker and a shade bluer in real life. Jim

I once posted in this forum that I didn't care for jade all that much-- well thanks to this forum and threads like this-- I have changed my mind!! Every piece I have seen pictured here has been gorgeous. I need to get me some! Then I need to get someone to cut it for me and then I need to perfect jade polishing. That first piece especially is drop dead beautiful!

Not far south of BCrockhound in Ft St John, at one time in 1979 the largest boulder of jade was found. I'm sure that's changed in todays records, but it seems to me plentiful, just havent found the pretty stuff Pooba has on Ebay.

I probably have some small one cab slabs if that will work. Jim

I have had a hard time with what little jade I have worked. Except the Turkish jade, that's been fairly easy to work. I just need to use a light hand. What I need to do is work a bunch of it in one day- just spend the day on jade and see if I improve that way.

Rockjunquie -- with a lot of jade, I find that I actually need to use a heavy hand, not a light one -- especially in the final polishing stages. A relatively dry leather wheel, with 100k diamond or "Super-cerium" and heavy pressure really heat up the stones. That seems to eliminate the problems with "orange-peeling" on the surface, and lets you get a good shine. That is my experience with Big Sur and other California jade, at least.

Thanks for that Stephan. I use all diamond wheels. I had always heard that to avoid the orange peel you used a light touch. I'll try a heavier had, too and see what happens.

Tela, do you have a way to cut slabs? I have a couple that I would like to send and let you figure out the best way to cut them. Jim

Every jade is different, but with most Washington jades I've worked, a light touch is needed for final polishing. You'll sometimes end up "chasing" the orange peel problem with lots of pressure, I've found...I'm super stoked to see what you come up with, rockjunquie!

Here's what I picked up: This is what the earrings I posted are out of. the blue areas will work up great so long as you use a very light touch when cabbing it. but if you've got any of that black in there, it's bad news. now I know why there is no dry pics of the rough on the listings. the black when dry is covered in while spots where millions of fissures and pits are filled with rock dust. This one crumbled into many, many pieces while slabbing oriented as shown in the picture lost at lest 50% to crumbles. I had to run it up and stand it on the flat to get any solid slabs out of it. It undercuts badly I couldn't get a decent polish no matter what I tried. I think I'll go back to looking for Wyoming rough.
