It is a challenge recharging my rotary tumblers. Sometimes having to break ice to get to water. Mostly do course grind in winter since clean outs do not have to be so clean. Here is basic procedure to avoid getting hands wet and freezing them. Keep hands dry #1 A tank or tub of water Dumped barrel contents in tray. In this case some pea gravel being prepped for filler. Grit to be reused, as it only ran a couple of days. Scooped water from trough with 5 gallon bucket and drain dirty water off three or four times by tilting tray, leaving heavier grit and pebbles in tray Dirty water on ground, pebbles and grit remain in tray fairly clean In this case, going to remove half the pebbles and replace them with obsidian chips. But will screen them to keep the coarse grit in the tub with the remaining pebbles to grind the obsidian. Grit free semi tumbled filler pebbles being stored in small tubs for use as needed Grit plus filler to be put back in barrel, water poured of carefully to leave solids in tray Tray of grit and filler put back in barrel, now time to add obsidian Ready to add water and cap barrel. Have plenty of extra obsidian and gravel filler to add as rocks grind smaller to keep barrel 7/8 full Since water lines will freeze all washing was done from rain filled trough with 5 gallon bucket. Usually stock pile coarse ground rocks till warm weather returns and clean outs can be done better with fresh water using garden hose.

Blame orrum captbob , he sent me a way heavy box of obsidian knaps from his nomad venture out west. Just changed into dry clothes from washing and sifting those things. Water was freezing down the side of the buckets. Can't wait to tumble these shrapnels, thanks Bill Before washing after

Oh they look good James. There is some knapping glass and various flint in there too!!! Maybe a cat turd or dead scorpion too!!! LOL. The knappers call that stuff debitage. There are a lot of spalls in there that would make great arrowheads. The group I learned knapping with sat in a circle on a tarp with indian symbols from their tribe painted on it, was a canvas type tarp. We sat there and talked and learned from each other, it was a social thing too. Anyway after two weeks we had a debitage pile six feet across and a foot or better in the middle!#! It was just so way cool!!! The rest of the debitage went in the dumpster. Well Chuck/Drummondislandrocks got a box.

I know good and well that your wife doesn't allow a camouflage comforter on her bed. Where was this picture taken... doghouse?

Sounds like a classic knap-in, a bull session. cept you were w/the real thing, how cool. Those chips will make Chuck some cool wraps after he puts his touch on tumbling them. Knapping club near the house has a pile dumped in the woods under the pines as big as two Cadillacs. Gotta go get that stuff. He must have a 40 X 40 barn stuffed full of knapping material, fine materials. There was a piece of mesquite in the box. Wrappers, cig butt, floor dust. Not now, they are clean and an hour away from a tumbler barrel. a couple of days in the tumbler and they will sure be clean. Looking forward to rolling these delicate jewels. Debitage is same word used by archeologists, computer tries to spell check it.

That's the dog's(and sometimes mine when allowed) futon. Dress warm captbob, it could drop below 50F in central Florida. Check the propane.

broseph82, we've not gone to school all week. We were on a two hour delay for this morning, but on my way to work (0630) it started snowing to beat the band and within 30 minutes they closed school completely. The valleys are not that bad, but those of us that live up on the plateaus can really get hammered. This was the W-road going up the mountain yesterday. I wonder what was done to turn them blue? Tidy Bowl??? Give a bunch of kids the week off and I suppose this could have been much worse! Kinda pretty!

Them kinda dogs own the best spots, and require blankets to keep their sparsely-furred bodies warm. Ridgebacks do not think for a minute that they are dogs.

rockpickerforever Jean, I have a bowl of kiblets for them on the fridge, that is how I get them off the couch/futon so I can run over and get a spot. one curls up against my chest, one serves as a lumbar back support and the 3rd one against my bum. Pull the covers over the whole bunch of us and drift off to over heat sleep.
