however I do think that some people vote for the person and not the item. I think that's a crock of horse hooie. I could care less who made the cab when I vote. Granted, it's usually one of the premier cab makers here that get my vote, but that is because they put out the best cabs! What is lame is voting for your own cab. *cough* I think that people should not vote for their own... I think contestant should not vote and leave it up to other people like some of the other contests I was in. I do have a feeling I know who was voting for mine though (and seems to like almost all my posts ). I guess the anonymous part would take a lot more effort. but as the contests are now it is run based on template. I do think that these competitions could use friendly constructive criticism on ways to improve on cabbing.. like for instance on one of mine someone recommended that I put a little higher polish on... which I did and it really came out nice. If people wanted to I could put up the threads for the contests since time is something I have (usually). I would not do this until we hear back from carleton since this is his thing... but if we wanted to do a different style of contest I would be willing to put up the threads. I think that it would be interesting to use local rocks only though... (that you found or bought... as long as it came out of your state) I know states like NY and NJ don't have a lot from what I have found but I have found jasper and other stuff thats nice when I wasn't rock hounding.

"I do think that these competitions could use friendly constructive criticism on ways to improve on cabbing."
This forum doesn't seem to do "constructive criticism" well. More of a "Gee, that cat poop looks great!!" kinda crowd here. Guess it's sort of like telling someone that their baby is butt ugly (even if it is!). Polite folks wouldn't go there. Just the way it is, and probably fine, as some may not appreciate having their work critiqued and may not take suggestions well. If someone wants recommendations on how to improve their (whatever it is), they should ask.
"I think that it would be interesting to use local rocks only though..."
You just knocked folks from several states out of the competition. Plus there is a bunch of foreign material that makes beautiful cabs. Why limit what people can enter?
You want to start a new cab competition contest thread, knock yourself out. @carlton hasn't been here in 4 months. It will fly or it won't. Don't believe the "local rocks only" would fly very far.

The local rocks thing is just an idea. as for the constructive critisism.... what your refering to would be considered just critisism.... constructive critisism is like.... you should try dryint the cab off before moving to the next wheel to see if there are scratches that still need to be taken out.

To critique someone's work and offer suggestions pretty much nails the meaning of constructive criticism to a T.
Again, polite folks don't usually go there without being asked.
Would you like for me to explain an analogy now?

Well I can put up a thread probably by the end of the week. As for prizes.. for those who ship them to the winner can contact me... otherwise its pretty much for bragging rights.
I will probably put up a vote for this contest but it would be for bragging rights unless someone comes forward. Maybe some day when I have time and am stable I can throw up a small box.

Well I had a little time so made a little something out of an end cut from the other piece of the slab you see. I just wanted to test how the material works so I stuck with the natural shape. I have 2 more small pieces of this stuff I may work some day. Very hard cutting and hard shaping the stone due to the copper. This is Michigan copper with Jasper WTF? IS it me needing more coffee, or has Glenn discovered the cloak of invisibilty for rocks. I can see everyone's entries except yours. If you removed it, WHY?

This is for anyone interested...The contests were started by RTH member Don in Feb 2012 as a weekly competition. He ran the comp and modified it to the style we have now . In August 2012,there was a bit of conflict and he stepped down as the overseer of the comp... Exerpt from the AUG 2012 contest We had 5 Great entries this month; thanks to everyone who participated. Please look over these fine entries and vote for the cab that appeals to you the most, judging by the standard with which you evaluate cabs by. August Contest Thread: forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/index.cgi?action=gotopost&board=comptime&thread=54131&post=598407 Due of conflict between members, I'm stepping down from managing the monthly cab contest. Various accusations of lying, cheating, etc have been made surrounding this contest and so for me, the spirit of the contest, which was to foster friendly competition and excellence within the forum, has been lost. I would like to thank everyone who made positive contributions to the previous contests. That said, I'm pleased to announce that RTH Member Carleton will be taking over and continuing the monthly cab contest. Thank you Carleton, I know that many members will be pleased to see the contest continue. Read more: forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/54785/vote-august-killer-cab-contest#ixzz3fp7ci5pLThe next months comp is when Carleton stepped up to take over the contest. He had run the contest for 19 months..Sept.2012 thru march 2015..A pretty long time for one thing .. He also supplied the prizes when there wasn't a volunteer for the donation of a prize....He just may have needed a break...If he dose read this ,I would like to express my appreciation for what he has done. That being said.. I would hope that we as a community could do something to keep alive and foster the spirit of what the competition has been for the last couple of years.. There is already a base format.. Can it use some tweaking, probably so...Suggestions are welcome! John

Probably because the post is soo old that the photo address got changed or something.. I haden't noticed until you pointed it out.. Let me know if you can see these. I just hand polished a natural rock so i'm not sure if there was a preform pic or not

I'd love to see the KCC continue (even though I haven't entered many times) - and I like the idea of having some sort of (different) constraining factor each month, that kind of helps make it more of a skill based challenge and less of "who has the fanciest material".
Some ideas for themes/constraints might be things like:
- "Make the most beautiful cab out of the most humble stone." - Certain shape cabs - Certain common material only (i.e., "Jade month", "Obsidian month" "Tigereye month" "Brecciation month" etc) - (maybe one week but not all the time), "self collected stones". - "plain black stones". - "striped stones" - "chatoyant stones"
Maybe we could vote on the theme for each month - people like voting on things (at least I do - I looooove voting on things!).
Just some ideas.

I like it... for common material it might be in classes like silicates or agates or something... not everyone has jade and tiger eye even if it is common.. i'm going on a big trip for rocks so i'll put something up next week unless my schedule is weird
