Hello everyone, it has been awhile since I've posted and I'm really feeling the need to get back on here an get back into it since I've been plagued with nauseating vertigo. With that being said... I started tumbling a new mix batch of jaspers from a previous batch that was junk and chert/flint. The chert is broken pieces off a large boulder that I broke up a few months ago with some botryoidal an quartz.
I will take some pictures tomorrow of the progress so far.
Thanks for stopping in!

The botryoidal action is pretty darned cool in your materials, FLrockhound! I wondered if the mystery stuff could be calcite? Is if a local find from Florida? Maybe captbob will know?

Its a fascinating work of art from nature. I had thought it could be some kind of calcite, but they don't hold the same properties of such. Calcite is usually less dense, sifter and breaks easily unlike the stone pictured. It has held up quite well tumbling with flint/chert that is much harder than most. It could be flint created by a different mix of minerals. The mystery stones an finding their identity by research is something I really enjoy about rockhounding. Sometimes the not so "pretty" rocks contain a good story to tell.

I recharged the 60/90 grit yesterday. This batch is taking a while to get the roundness I'm looking for. It is beginning to look like this will be my longest tumble. I don't plan on rushing this batch so, Im willing to keep rolling in coarse for a couple months if it needs be. Its an incredibly hard rock an I kind of expected this when I was breaking it up.
I thought the chalcedony would round off quicker in with chert. It looks to be holding up very well with minimal volume loss.
Might let it settle overnight and take out some H2O an check to see if that makes a difference. The barrel is about 80% full of rock with about 20% water. The percentage is an estimate. I can hear a gentle grind an not alot of knocking noises.

Looks more like agate than chert IMO. Let me see if I can round up some of my chert...

broseph82 the chert I have doesn't seem to have the colors you posted. It is mainly light grey with white matrix/chalk on outer edges no banding whatsoever. I also threw in some yellow calcite looking material. I ordered a UV light to check for some luminescence on what appears to me as calcite. The light should help me find it on the side of my road at night(perk of living in the sticks is no streetlights) .

It got bigger and bigger the more I dug around it. fantastic5 may have some extra purple striped chert fossilman . I believe she said it came from a quarry around her parts. The purple stripped chert that I found Fossilman, was in a friend of mine's gravel driveway. He and my husband were working on one of our daughters cars and they started laughing. I looked up from my hands and knees position in his driveway to see them looking out from under the car at me. The conversation between them went something like this: Friend: Does she do that often? Husband: Can't take her anywhere. Then of course the conversation went on to all the different times I embarrassed my husband picking up stones in various places. I think what Jimi is recalling is a friend of ours who was telling us that there is a quarry here in Chattanooga that occasionally will hit a purple banded and bulls-eye chert like what I found in the driveway gravel. I've never tried to gain access to any of the active quarries here in town to collect. But I think when they were building our Costco I ran across a big dump pile of larger rocks and some of them were banded. But I don't think they were as purple as what I was finding in the driveway. I did grab a few (again embarrassing hubby ). When I do the spring clean of my garage, I will see if I can find them.

Nice mix. In the first picture with your whole mix...what are the two light green pieces together on the left edge? I have a piece of that in my tumbler now, but don't even know where it came from. TIA

I love those blue-ish green ones! I also know your pain. A couple of years ago, I had sinusitus causing vertigo. AND it would happen at the worst time(s). I.E. on Pacific Coast Highway 1 to Jade Cove. So I had to pull over, take meclizine, hope I didn't projectile vomit and take a nap. I guess the cliffs of Jade Cove and vertigo aren't conducive to safe rockhounding. LOL

I've been wanting to update this for the last 2 weeks but I was in a bad car accident an it shot me into relapse I had 5 staples in my noggin an my fingers are virtually useless. Anyways I had my wife take my barrel off last week. I'm pretty anxious to get the rocks washed off an start 220 after 5 weeks in 60/90. Hopefully there's is good results.
