Bolinas is in Marin County, Northern California, and is famous for the locals removing the turn-off sign from the highway. It is also well-known for almost having more dogs than people (mostly black labs, it seems). Hence, Agate Beach is quite dog-friendly. Even if the locals do not want you find the town, your dog is welcome. ;-) Here is a photoset from several trips to Agate Beach. The agates found here are not spectacular, but they are unique. They are not even truly agates, but a clear to light-brown chalcedony with black inclusions, and have been termed "oil agates." Some say it is real oil (or tar) that is in the inclusions, but I rather think it is hematite (similar to Montana moss). Most are pea-sized or smaller, but t is a fun outing. Jasper and fossils can also be found there, along with pieces of iron, which seem to be the shells from eroded/broken concretions (hence, my hematite theory -- lots of iron here). my favorite finds, here are little pieces of whale bone. some claim to have found larger pieces, but I guess wasn't there at the right times. No complaints. A great day out. When you get to the beach, walk out to where the creek is. this is where the agates and whale bone can be found. On your stroll, you can do some tide-pooling. www.flickr.com/photos/36618387@N06/sets/72157615637404335/

amazing how much difference there is in a 25 yard walk down a beach, isn't there. From one material to another in just a few paces. Hounding the beaches is my favorite because of the sound of the water. I hate to leave when it is time to go. Its a fight every time. thanks for the pictures, makes me want to get out and hound the beaches here.

Yes, quite amazing. Also, sometimes, the difference between jackpot and noting.
The sound of the sea is wonderful to me as well. It's been far too long since I have been.
