It is about 8 inches in diameter, yellow- gold calcite with great definition of dogtooth pattern, but a completely smooth surface. they want $24. I spent a little time on the internet and could not find anything comparable, just little ones with wildly varied prices. Seems like a good deal to me but wanted to run it across your minds and experience and get opinions. I'll go get it today if you think its worth what they're asking. Thank you! |

prices do vary. but any 8" has to be worth $24

they cost about 6 dollars a inch to cut less the cost of materal so i say it is a fair price at that

Most of the value is based on 3 things. material used, Size, and quality of finish. If a rare or hard to find material is used, the price can go way up. Next, the larger the sphere, the more material is involved, increasing the price. And finally quality of finish. A sphere with an over all mirror finish will bring a higher price than one with lots of chips and a dull finish.
And then there's the matter of time involved in making the sphere, electricity and if grinding with silicon carbide grit, the cost of grits used. But at $24.00 for an 8" sphere, by all means buy it. If the finish isn't perfect, it can always be reground and polished. It may loose a little of its diameter, but at $24.00 it's a real bargain.

I keep waiting for a picture?!! snowmom, where is it? not in my hands yet, I put my back out and have not felt up to an hour and a half drive (each way) in my uncomfortable little car, I'm rapidly recovering though and should make the trip over to pick that thing up in a day or 2.

I know the feeling,put mine out several days ago,getting better now-relax and take it easy D......The sphere will give you something to look forward too......Thumbs up

thanks all, I knew better than to do what I did to put it out. Sometimes it is so darn inconvenient to wait until somebody else can move something for you. Learned my lesson. Much better today. Road trip is in my near future. |

thank you all, the back is headed in the right direction though I feel like I can't trust it now, it is mostly pain free. (protective and wanting to be cautious in how I move) Spouse drove me to fetch the sphere. I think it is 7.5 inches diameter, and it weighs 26.3 Lbs. I asked him to carry it for me, considering the bad back and all... It seems to be creamy white and translucent (flashlight sends a nice glow into it partways) with pink overtones and one slightly purple/lavender/shadowy area, as well as one white dot. It was filthy and covered with brown paint spatters, blue paint rubs, and sticky stuff. Just needed somebody to love it. Cleaned up fine with the proper household chemicals. Not sure if it is calcite or quartz, (one of you will know by looking at it..I am sure) but I've already bonded with it!  |
