From a trip Justin and I took three years ago. Lots of cool geology. A couple of side-trips to various locations. One rock-hounding trip, plus a little collecting on the way home. Pay special attention to the sulfur crystals at Bumpass Hell. www.flickr.com/photos/36618387@N06/sets/72157630680195116/Enjoy -Stephan

Very nice! Now I want to go hike there haha. We went by there a couple of months ago on our way to Susanville.

We had Wasps out in Michigan that looked similar to the one in photo. The long pair of tail extensions would be inserted into a living tree almost all the way up to the abdomen. I always suspected they were laying eggs in the tree. We only noticed them on Box elder trees. That feat always amazed me because the two tails were about the size of horse hair and about 2 1/2 to 3 inches long .

outstanding trip, super photography. Next best thing to being there. The crystals are fascinating. Did it smell like sulfur in the area? Did the water smell of it ? Mountain terrain is mind boggling for a flatland Midwesterner. I like the direct intent of some of the location names. bumpass and elephant butt? probably named by the same person. beautiful trip photos, nice memories for the kiddo, too. Thanks for the show.

Thank you. Happy to provide some mountains for you. It did, indeed, smell like sulfur.
Bumpass hell is named after a person -- Kendall V. Bumpass... an early explorer who was walking around the mudpots, broke through the thin, fragile (I think mica) crust and boiled his leg.
The Elephant Butt tunnel is courtesy of a vandal with a sense of humor. It is actually called Elephant Butte.
