There is three of these within 15 miles of the house. Maybe more, and a lot of smaller abandoned ones. This one fronts I-85, so I parked the scooter and climbed the fence. Don't tell. Scooter at rush hour. Peculiar 'fracture ?' close to the edge. What the heck, it's got trees growing on it. Crossed the 'fracture' and looking straight down. A large orange dewatering pump about center of photo. Stomach queazy ha. Closer view of pump. Nice little hole in the ground This is a good cross section of what lies under The north half of the state. Fifty feet of clay and granite below. Some granite exposures, mostly on hill tops(Stone Mountain, Panola Mountain). Ground water is plentiful in horizontal fractures 1-4 inches tall. Adjacent water wells rarely run dry, even when close to such a divot. Wells average 300 feet deep, drilled with rotary vibratory bits six inches in diameter at $10-$12 per foot. Water sweet. Typical hill top exposure

Nice pics of the granite quarries, jamesp! Were you able to get in them and bring any granite home with you? Yikes, your bike is a bit close to I-85.

Dang gutsy jumping that fault, looks to me like a chunk of wall is ready to break loose and slide down. It terrifies me just looking at it! Mines are fascinating. We have the world's largest limestone mine up here, over a mile deep and super wide, when you look down and see those monster trucks they use to haul rock and they look like they could be picked up between your thumb and forefinger, that's deep. Its on my bucket list to see the Sudbury Nickel mines as well. loved seeing the pics, thanks for the tour.

Like Rob Lowe riding the sharky shark. LOL Did not like the big fracture snowmom. I am such a chicken, I laid down on the ground and stuck my camera out over the ledge. Mind you it was sloped and covered with slick pine straw. There is a quarry in Tyrone Ga about 15 miles east. The lady that sold them the property was granted 3 cents per cubic yard of granite they removed for her life. They say she is a millionaire many times over from that royalty. Imagine that. The Douglasville quarry is 15 miles to the east, they will let you ride to the bottom in a dump truck and hand pick boulders for landscape jobs. Been there done that too. I have seen black tourmaline crystals as big as logs in that granite. But to fragile to separate from the hard granite.
