A stand of southern long leaf pines still exists close to the house. My wife wants to sell them on Etsy so she commissioned me to locate and help collect them. Long leaf pines served well in history. British sail fleets used to harvest them off the barrier islands for masts. One mast 100 feet long, another 120 feet long. 3 feet at base, 2 feet at top. Big sail boats. More long leaf pines were harvested on Lake George in central Florida in 1942 for the construction of P51 fighter plane fuselages. The Wrigleys, the chewing gum moguls still own a square mile of virgin long leafs on St Catherine's Island off the coast of Georgia. .002% still survive. Replaced by faster growing Loblollies.

We have some very long pinecones we collected years ago in the Sierra foothills. Lovely cones. We used to put them around the Christmas tree and around the fireplace (outside).
Your photo shows them off well, too.

beautiful. Do you collect the seeds too? I'd bet there is a demand for the seedlings if you can produce them!

Your photo shows them off well, too. We were sifting through the Etsy ads and found a lady selling Sugar Pine pinecones. They were up to 18 inches long and heavy. She finds them in the Sierras in California Pat. fossilman-The Coulter Pine(native of S. California) pinecones are referred to as widow makers. Not only are they big, but they are heavy at 4 pounds.

beautiful. Do you collect the seeds too? I'd bet there is a demand for the seedlings if you can produce them! There are thousands of acres of test plots in the Ocala National forests growing hybrid long leaf pines snowmom. It is about the finest lumber pine. They are slow to grow, so they are pursuing a faster growing hybrid. The seedlings are popular decorative plants though. Competition is too fierce to make a profit off of them. Pine seedlings are big business here. Long leaf pine seedlings are strange looking for the first 3-4 years, popular as an ornamental:

Use to have pine cone battles as a kid. Had to take off your t shirt too. It was rough at times. My brother and neighbor kids use to have mud clod battles too after the garden was plowed in the spring. That really hurt at times !

Pine cone battles...ROFL garock! jamesp, I sure hope she doesn't have you searching for cattails this summer. Water moccasin heaven... Pinecones look purdy spray painted gold. I collected some out of our yard and placed them in a wrought iron basket. Birds like 'em, too, with some peanut butter on the cones.

Mr. Frankie, remember the green ones before they open, spines sticking straight out and heavy like a hard ball. Now taking your shirt off takes it to a new level. That's just cold. Glad we did not meet up with your hood back in the day. That would be time to run home to Momma.

The peanut butter recipe goes way back Jan. Hang em high and watch the birds wrestle w/them.

All of those pine cones are small compared to the Bunya Bunya pine from Australia. One street in Riverside, Ca was lined with imported trees. When the trees started dropping cones, they warned the people to park off the road, and pedestrians to use a different road for walking. Those damned things would go right through a cars windshield. permaculturenews.org/2013/11/27/the-bunya-bunya-pine-araucaria-bidwillii/
