Wondering if any RTH members carry an e-tool with them to use while rockhounding? If you do, which one do you use? I have been looking at a Gerber NATO e-tool. Even if we don't find any pretty rocks or minerals, it could be used for zombie defense.

Here's a pic from Gerber's website of one of their e-tools. After doing a little research, probably will not get the one that is NATO-approved although it comes with a sheath/carry case.

E-tool, back in the old days [Army] the full name is "entrenching tool". Yes, I have had experience with it in it's originally intended use. We have a couple of the original ones we bought at a surplus store, always have one with us at least in the pickup. No idea of the quality now except I've seen a couple import knockoffs that were junk. If this is as good as typical Gerber stuff, it's good.

Thank you, quartz! I have noticed that there are a lot of 'em out there on the market, and many are junk as you mentioned. One thing I noticed is that Gerber's sheath for the e-tool has been discontinued unless you buy it with the NATO-approved e-tool. Weird.

If you really need a sheath, a couple layers of decent canvas properly sewn up would make a good one, and provision could be made for a few other items; hammer, chisels, etc.

Try to get Vietnam to WWII era etools, the more recent ones are junk and will fold up on you when you least expect it, causing possible injury and probable frustration at the least. The more recent ones are poor quality, even those that were military issue, the foreign copies aren't worth the energy to pick them up let alone pay money for them. Still easily found in flea markets, resale shops, military suplus, etc, though they are getting harder to find than they once were. We have carried them for backpack camping for years and always have furnished one for each car trunk in the family... when you need one you might really need one. don't want to take a chance on injury while digging your stranded car out of mud or snow or other sticky situation, get the good stuff.

Thanks, quartz, for your suggestion on how to make your own sheath for an e-tool and other tools. Thanks, snowmom, for your recommendations. I used to have one that was in a plastic sheath, but cannot find it. My brother may have it. I did a bit of research on the e-tools and decided on the Gerber with the pick so I can poke Rick with it if he gets outta hand. It is military-grade, but not NATO-approved.

Thanks, Fossilman! I'm glad that you held on to your e-tool and other military goodies. 50 years is a long time. Does it fold up?

I don't have a fold up one, but I can vouch for this one www.amazon.com/Cold-Steel-Special-Forces-Hardwood/dp/B00169V99K We have it for camping. The edge will cut, too. The cover is a good investment. edit-- meant to add - it is 20 inches long. Great little tool. We had an "e-tool" which was supposed to be a good one, but which bent the first time we used it.

That's a very nice e-tool, rockjunquie, and thanks for recommending it. I read and watched a video on it on this website: www.combatreform.org/etools.htmI appreciate everyone's input and sharing of information!! I purchased the Gerber e-Tool with the pick, #22-01945, and hope it arrives here so we may take it with us to the Graves dig.

I saw a lot of the junk ones over in Quartzsite this year. I thought about buying one but never did. I just have a short shovel but a folding one might be good for hounding as long as it doesn't collapse when used.

That particular saw belongs to my boss but I do have a smaller one that is mine. Unfortunately don't have a diamond chain for it or I might be tempted to try it on a few rocks.

Personally I wouldn't scrape up dog crap with one. I like results more than extreme portability.

Personally I wouldn't scrape up dog crap with one. I like results more than extreme portability. I understand what you are saying, Mark K, but in this case portability is a problem so we decided on an e-tool instead of carrying our shovel with the other gear we have to transport. The distance from the vehicles to the site is far enough that the site owners are providing golf cart-type vehicles for those that have a difficult time walking long distances.
