I did a little rock hounding at Partridge Island, Parrsboro, Nova Scotia this weekend. Although there was still ice on the best part of the beach beneath the cliffs, there was enough beach exposed to collect a few of the winter falls.
This score of the day was stumbling over a fresh fall of Chabazite crumbling out of unstable (rotten) Basalt. The challenge here was finding a sound enough piece of basalt to support the Chabazite crust. Even with careful wrapping, a number of the pieces broke in transport.
Chabazite (aka – hydrous calcium, sodium, aluminium silicate) is a highly complex zeolite that is often associated with Stilbite and Analcime. It usually occurs as pink to red distorted cubic crystals that have a crackled appearance beneath a glazed surface.
Here are a few of the better finds. Some show a little golden Stilbite and some show a little clear/white Analcime.
