I have just taken up the hobby of stained glass, and this got me interested in rock tumbling again. In about a year, I will be moving to a larger place in NW Ohio, and will be able to have my own studio for artistic projects. I recalls that when I bought a tumbler over a decade ago, we bought the only kind of tumbler the store carried, which was tightened in the middle of the lid...so if it was too loose it leaked, and if it was too tight it leaked. I threw it out when I moved to an apartment. When I get my new place I would like to get a better tumbler, one that tightens around the rim, perhaps? Any suggestions of currently available models?

Most folks here use either Thumlers or Lortone brands. Both are good tumblers with their own pluses and minuses.

Lortone or Thumler...which one seals in the center again, and which one seals on the edges? I don't want the one that seals in the center.

Lortone has the center seal. What you want to tumble (size wise & quantity) would have a lot to do with recommending a model. ETA: The Rock Shed is a good place to get an idea of what's out there. Here's the Thumbler's page: (but you should shop around when ready to buy) therockshed.com/tumbler2.htmlI mostly use the 15 lb Model B units, but absolutely love the 12 lb barrel as well. Never had a leak in either. I have a couple duel 3 lb barrel models and the 9 lb unit, but have never used them. So I can't say much about their qualities. Also, the Thumbler's 15 lb model B comes with 2 different motors. One for rocks and a faster rotating model used to polish other things like shell casings. You want the one for rocks with the 1550 RPM motor. The faster unit would probably not be kind to rocks or slabs.
