1. get a 'pine 2. get an old boot 3. put 'pine in boot and boil in water seasoned with salt & pepper 4. cook for 4 hours 5. remove 'pine from boot 6. throw 'pine away (save some quills for toothpicks) 7 serve boot with generous amounts of beer

I have never tried them, but have talked to a few that have. They say they have very tender meat and taste just fine.

When my mom was in grade school, she lived with an aunt and uncle in Kinzua, OR most of the year, as the dryer climate was easier on her with her asthma problem. Aunt Martha had a pet porcupine, came in and out at will through a "porcupine door" uncle Vic had built in the back door of the house. Mom said the critters favorite time was getting its belly scratched. One day a fairly old Indian fellow came and wanted to trade the "pine" for a salmon; no deal. He came around several times with a better deal, but never got it. His intent, to eat it.

They have a diet consisting mostly of leaves, plants, flowers, buds and often just tree bark in the wintertime. Opossums have a diet consisting mostly of carrion just like a Buzzard If I were starving, I would eat a possum, but only if it was my final choice for a meal

Yes people eat porcupine,it's a sweet eating meat.....A bit of trivia,"porcupine" is the only meat you can eat raw and not get sick-old survival tip! I have a few friends that are old trappers (in their 70's now)they have eating most everything once or twice! They eat porcupine and raccoon a lot.... I ask them,"what is the worst meat they ever ate",it was beaver, said it was way to greasy and stringy!! They ate coyotes, cougars, gophers, fox, snakes, birds of all kinds,etc,etc...........I don't know if this goes with it,but they drink a lot of whiskey and shoot a lot of guns!!! Both Montana mountain men-fun to hang around with and glad to call them my friends... Yes,I have eaten at both their homes (Both great cooks)so I know I have eaten some weird freaky meat, but they never told me what it was-That's the way I liked it........Thumbs up

I've had porcupine twice. Both at my father-in-law's hunting camp. The first time I think it was just thrown in the old army range oven and baked. The flavor wasn't bad, but the consistency was somewhere between leather and rubber. It was barely edible. The next time my father-in-law said he "boiled the piss out of it" before roasting it. This time it was tender and tasted good. I remember it having a unique but good flavor. I'd eat it again.
When I was a teenager, we had beavers damming up streams and flooding trails. We contacted a local trapper who came and trapped some beavers. He gave us one to eat at deer camp. That was also roasted in an arm range. It was the worst meat I have ever eaten in my life. I've heard that if every speck of fat is removed, beaver is good. I heard of another person who ate beaver that was not cleaned properly. His response was, "That was the best beaver I've ever eaten. That was the only beaver I've ever eaten, and I never want to eat beaver again!"
We eat a squirrel dinner every year at the camp I currently hunt at. Squirrels are delicious!

Being born and raised on a mixed farm. Roundups were a regular part of spring. I have tried them ground up into burgers. Tasted just fine. Its better than veal. People were eating burgers with no clue what they were chewing on. After a long day of wrestling calve's to vaccinate, brand and cut the bull calves. You work up a good appetite. To this day I still can't get the smell of burnt hair out of my mind. Plus, still have the lumps on my shins from the sharp hooves the little buggers have. The weirdest thing I have ever ate, was in Jamaica. My x's uncle asked me if I wanted to go fishing. He took me to the creek out back and started catching these claw less crayfish looking things that I thought was bait. After catching about 50 of these creepy looking things. We had back to his house I ask him where are we going fishing. He said we just did and proceeded to fry these morbid looking prehistoric critters. I thought he was messing with me until he put them on a plate and the kids cleaned them up in a flash. Lets just say we went fishing everyday after that.
