I remember thinking that this was some pet wood from the texture of the outside. But when I picked it up, it was obvious that there were alternating red and white layers and it didn't look like any wood that I had come across. Well, it was intriguing so I stuck it in the bucket and forgot about it until a few days ago. Not even sure if it was silicated enough to get a shine due to the weather worn exterior, I cut it anyway. Turns out that its quite nice! One is wet and one is dry. Thanks for looking! ~Roland

Beautiful slab It could be opalized wood. I bought some rough from Turkey and it had all kinds of different grain patterns. I also got some agatized wood from Oregon that had a lot of very fine lines.

There is actually a deposit of rhyolite exactly like that associated with some petrified wood just east of California City on the Mojave desert. I hauled a couple of loads home to the Ojai house to use as garden rock. Pretty stuff!......Mel

Plomosa Rd. Quartzsite Az. green banded ryolite. The trick is don't pick the weathered pieces up on top of the ground. Dig up pieces that stick up a little. The weathered stuff is full of pits and big open layers. You done a good job James.

looks a lot like some of the kinds of fossilized stromatolite. Very pretty!
