My wife took these w/her fast camera. It has a burst feature and takes about 10 photos in one second. We are always taking still shots, she is geared for action, Nikon D90 with Nikkor ED f1:2.8 70-200mm telephoto. Some newer 'fast' digital technology that should be cheaper and used in point and shoots, if not already. I was astonished at what that camera can do, all shot in complete auto mode. Lots of wetlands on the farm, so we get wetland loving birds like indigo buntings, scarlett tanagers, blue birds, and gold finches Look at the sweet song birds up close and you can see they are actually quite fierce and quarrelsome. Many young males that are just starting to develop the yellow color. Too early for nesting; I think we are 2-3 months away. They are eating the black nyger seed at one inch per hour. Black oil sunflower seed is another favorite of theirs. Cardinal w/attitude. Hey you-got a nose problem...I think he is frustrated with the bickering finches.

O James I meant to mention that your wife did an excellent job capturing that scene. Was the camera on a tri-pod?

nice pic's. Are those Pine Siskins rather than finches? Neighbors are big gold finch fans Mark. They haver been coming through here a long time. Timing and color change seems indicative. A big deal when they come thru. So I took everyones word for it. Will look up Siskin. Maybe I am wrong. Mark, the Siskin too is a finch. Looks much the same. Maybe I am out of their territory though.

O James I meant to mention that your wife did an excellent job capturing that scene. Was the camera on a tri-pod? No tripod Ed. That lens catches a good bit of light. She cropped a lot too, so she did not have the magnification turned up too high to restrict light. She corrected me, it is 4 frames per second. The D3 will scream at 11 frames per second, ozzie camera:

These are beautiful pictures but the images that show bird wing action are fantastic. I live in Austin, Tx. and want to feed the smaller birds but have a problem with white wing dove and wonder if any feeders excludes this bird.

You might try getting milo and scattering it away from your feeder a short distance. The doves love it and may not bother the other in the feeder as much.Just don't hunt them over it! The doves we have,Incas,Ring Neck, and Mourning, walk around on the ground, they don't get on the feeder, and tend to stay away a few feet. snuffy

That gal can take some beautiful pics, jamesp!! The cardinal cracks me up. Definitely got a 'tude. snuffy, we have mourning dove that take over our hanging bird feeder. They are very bossy, kinda like bullies. We were surprised when they started eating from the feeder.

Yup, Pine Siskins. Finches have a different beak.....Mel No joke. Pine Siskins ? I have never had such a swarm of yellow finches, and so many lacking in yellow. So these birds are acting very different from yellow finches. Yellow finches always with bright yellow males. And not near as aggressive and in such great numbers. Nor do i remember anything but yellow finches feeding on the dedicated nyger seed feeder. Thanks for straightening that out panamark and Sabre52. We are pumped ! listening to recordings, they are siskins. looking at pointed beak on these siskins, unlike blunter beak of finch. They have voracious appetites. Wife wanted yellow finches, feels betrayed LOL.
