Last month I attended the Deming Rockhound Roundup in New Mexico. I've been cutting Thunderegss for a few days now and it occurred to me I didn't share photos from the fall trip I made to the Baker Ranch/Hermanas area. So here are a few. On the fall trip I concentrated on digging in areas away from the known mining spots. I was fortunate enough to find several areas of float. These eggs are bigger than what one finds in the tailings of the Baker Egg Mine itself. The dud rate is also higher. The first one is my favorite as it appears to have had an eventful life which started out filling the cavity with layers of agate making a fortification pattern. That stage ended with the white and then rust colored layers of the pattern. It then looks like quartz took over and was filling the cavity with some nicely terminated crystals. But then a greenish and grey agate solution began infiltrating the hollow which ended with another rust colored layer. Finally quartz filled the remainder of the egg. In the next one I like the blue agate with the small area of red. Finally I like the light and dark contrasts of this one. Thanks for looking. When I'm done cutting the eggs gathered last month I'll post a few more photos.

Interesting to see how the formation conditions changed so radically between the fine layered fortification and the centres. Worth digging for.
