Back in 1836, Dr. Abraham Gesner, Canada’s first geologist, remarked on the most rare and beautiful crystals of siliceous sinter in geodes forming branching crystals imitating flowers from the lofty overhanging cliffs of McKay Head. In 2015, this material can still be found due to continued erosion and rock falls from the basalt cliffs by freeze thaw cycles as winter turns to spring. Laura and I went rockhounding at McKay Head last Saturday. While the others went off is search of agate and jasper, I spent most my time in search of the siliceous sinter that Gesner had wrote of almost 180 years ago. Siliceous Sinter. Siliceous Sinter(Quartz Flower) broken. Siliceous Sinter (Quartz Flower) intact. This was Laura’s find of the day. Siliceous Sinter in Basalt matrix. Siliceous Sinter in Basalt matrix. Siliceous Sinter in Basalt matrix. Darryl.

It is mostly a hockey puck with a bad man standing above it ready to whack the poor thing. Puck lives matter too. Jim

Never heard of siliceous sinter. Pretty little specimens. Learn something new every day! mandat.org has a page on it www.mindat.org/min-6690.html
