Wow, is that about a 5 foot blade? I think if I were to go that big it would be a drag saw, Maybe slower but I could make my own blades.

Have used a number of different mineral oils and have never found that to be a problem. Is it straight mineral oil or mixed with something?......................MrP

I'm not familiar with the evaporation either. While diesel would have good properties as a cutting oil the smell it would leave on the rocks and the flammability are not things I would want to deal with. I got to see the aftermath of a fire in a shop that used diesel, makes it very understandable why it's the main ingredient in napalm. Drag saw at J2B2

Mineral oil evaporates. I reuse my stubs after rocks have been sawed off, after baking them in the sun for a month or so. Between the sun, heat, and bit of rain we have they are remarkably oil-free by the time I saw the end off and use again. Same result for the wooden chopping block on the end of my BBQ. I treat it with mineral oil and its good for a week or three, but soon is dry to the starting to open cracks stage even tho its tight hardwood. So evaporates, but not enough to worry about from an economical viewpoint. Tom

Hows does water soluble oil work with saws that the blade is not running in oil? I seen one setup 45 years ago but do not remember any details of how well the saw cut using it.

Diesel evaporates faster than mineral oil. I've seen a 48" saw that uses diesel. He looses 5 to 7 gallons if he cuts during the day in the summer so he only cuts at night. He has an argon fire suppression installed on the saw. The saw frame is a 20ft shipping container.

Water soluble machining oil is in no way suitable for rock saws, it's made for flushing cutting tools when machining metals. I use Lube cool 4800 in my 4 and 6 inch trim saws but wouldn't use it in a slab saw. Smokeys EZ cut in on the list of recommended cutting oils for Barranca, Think I might try it in the 2nd 14 inch HP after I rebuild it. barrancadiamond.com/pdf/tec/bd_slab_saw_coolants.pdf

The evaporation may be with naphathetic (smelly) based oils as opposed to paraffinic oils like food or medical grade oils.
