About 14 years ago my wife was interested in the metaphysical qualities of stones and crystals. She wanted something called black agate (best I can remember). It came from thunder eggs somewhere close to Sacramento. The egg must have weighed around 10 pounds and she took it to a local guy who did lapidary out of his home. He made a couple cuts using a drop saw and it took hours. While he waited he showed us how to cab. I realized that I finally have a saw capable of cutting it and I'm to cut a slice of the agate. I'll post the picture of the slab when I'm done. The cut will be perpendicular to the face and below the agate that shows.

I love stories like this! 14 years is a long time to postpone the gratification of cutting a favorite rock. Thanks for this post!

It came from thunder eggs somewhere close to Sacramento. Those are some nice slabs. I've never heard of thundereggs close to Sac-town before, although I guess it depends on what you mean by "close." I've heard of Berkeley and San Jose (both no longer available). If there is something else, I'd love to hear about about it. I have to say, though, what is pictures looks like Oregon (Friend's Ranch) or Nevada (Black Rock Desert). Is it possible that it was bought at rock shop near Sacramento? Like the one in Vacaville, perhaps? If there is a place to dig near here, I'd love to know.

The material comes from the California Colorado desert. It may have been purchased from the rock shop in Vacaville.

That sounds reasonable.
