Well last month Brian and me went to NC to see an old friend. on the way through we got a chance to visit with Jamesp..Tell you what ,He is a down to earth cool guy....We spent the better part of the rainy day just visiting..Took a tour of the green houses (torturing my nephew with the threat of spiders and other insects..LOL)...Got to see his hoard/stash of corals..Saw all of his Mad Scientist Machines..Met the dogs...And just talked like old friends do... James and Randall fixing up some bamboo walking sticks.. After trading some rocks and things we made our way over to the Savannah River to hunt for some agates...Rain and a few detours later we made it the location..Sorry no pics of the site..But here are the pics of what I found.. 8 inch peg for reference As I was taking these pics I saw some Georgia agate from a previous hunt A piece of each for comparison And a big chunk Well thanks for looking and to James for being a gracious host...JOhn

Very nice. I'd love to hear techniques for finding this material if you're willing to share. Savannah river is in my backyard, so to speak, and would enjoy a trip out there.

Orrum and Ringlord the Savannah agate is really easy to hunt ...it is found in a road cut just up from the river, you just pull up and walk along the road... The big chunk is from a spot behind a residential area that they are building in north Georgia.. same thing , pull in ,get out ,pick up...Thanks to James for getting me directions to them...John

Where about in north Georgia? I go to Young Harris sometimes for classes at William Holland.

Had a great day with you guys. Thanks for visiting. Looks like you guys racked up. Savannah pretty easy to hunt. used to be boulders of that material. Property al got posted and all the boulders unreachable. Hope you guys were able to use the bamboo sticks.

jamesp Jim's always a hoot. That last piece of colorful agate/jasper looks friggin awesome! Tips for finding agate when hiking: check your elevation! If you have a topo map or app on phone pay attention. You want to be about 1400 in elevation and start looking around. Agate forms around 14-1600 and will pop out and roll down hill to 11-1400 (in my areas). Googling you'll see about the same info. Also, if you're searching a creek look for rocks that don't seem to fit in (the odd balls) and check elevation cause if you're finding agates branch out horizontally on land and start looking too. orrum ringlord
