16 gallon drums filled w/soil 7-8 inches from top. Water by filling till water pours over rim. No every day watering pains. Cage stuck in drum. Easy, very happy/healthy plants. No weeds. No bending over. Varmints challenged. Wife thieves fire pit and plants it. Then has me make metal art to grow in it. And lists it on Etsy to sell the pot. Ever heard of cherry tomatoes ? Same concept, except cherry squash. Called a bush squash, yum.

How the heck did you ever find the time for 14,000+ posts here? You give new meaning to the word "busy"!

So, James ... what kind of soil did you use for the tomatoes? Did you import some from Chernobyl? Three Mile Island? Nice! You've got quite the green thumb. Paul

How do you make the metal art grow in it? Certainly an attractive alternate fill for a fire pit.

Funny, the insect/bee is getting hits from you guys. It is the only piece of folk art I have ever designed and welded. Visitors comment on the insect too. LOL, causing a little resentment within, because they don't comment on more functional pieces. And recently I started welding fire pits with that easy-to-do 'minimalistic' flat base and sales of them are well surpassing the old style with legs. So I listen to comments and certain watch what sells well. Told myself long ago i would never do folk art..... Now thinking about refiguring the (autistic) artistic mind and start making folk art. hmmm, stooping, making folk art. dang it this is funny, a past photo was taken of a dog sitting in a fire pit. A Craig's list competitor reported it as cruelty to animals, forcing me to close my craig's list ads till the matter was 'mitigated'. It was a dirty act to keep me at bay cause I give him lots of competition. The 'dog in the fire pit' photo still sells pits on Etsy, no problem there. Here is the photo, and yes Lucy is miserable(eye brows), and yes she was forced to sit there but no bull whips were used: So, my wife likes money and wants me to sell fire pits so she is trying to make the young dog on the right get in the new style fire pit. Check out the Maggot's disdain, body language, and ear position: Note older dogs staying back. Waiting for us to put more food in the fire pit, but nothing to do with getting in it.

So they're basically swamp tomatoes? Huh, interesting, I should try that next year. I have a few plants growing in pots in front of my apartment, where it's really sunny and sheltered and watering is a twice-a-day chore in hot weather :/
And LOL to someone reporting you for animal abuse!!! Unbelievable. Yeah, those poor dogs are clearly suffering, lol.

Unbelievable. Yeah, those poor dogs are clearly suffering, lol. The tallness of those containers allow deep soil for plant performance and a lot of space at the top to fill up for a deep watering. Working great lilac. The barrels are about as lightweight a planter for the size, most planters that size are really heavy and expensive. A local barrel recycler supplies me about 20/week. Been selling them as industrial trash cans after some mods. Looks like planters are a market too. I stencil big numbers or letters on them, makes them sell better for some reason. Those dogs are rrootteenn. They have no idea of hard times or abuse. Couch potatoes.
