Hey glennz, if I were you I would just go get a good pile of it and start cutting. Who knows what you will get into but I will bet some pretty cool stuff. Rock on man!

I am with Joe for a couple reasons. First, the best way to get people excited about a new material is for them to see it in all stages: rough, slabbed, and cabbed/polished. Heck people are already curious about it, and they have only seen the one photo. Second, once you know what a PITA it is to collect say 100lbs, you can set a price based on time and effort. Fishing for a price now will only lead to low-ball offers. For example, the most I would pay for a gamble rock sight-unseen is $0.25/lb.
If I stumbled upon a plentiful supply of lapidary grade stuff with a lot of potential, I would grab 100lbs, high grade, and ask if I could send free (but limited in size) samples to the best cutters on the forum. They would likely show finished photos from the material that would knock your socks off. People would see the potential of the stone, and bingo! proven product.

I would be willing to buy a slab of material like the pic.It would have to be at least 5"X7"X 1/4"thick sent in a sfrb. I would be willing to pay $10 +shipping. I will cut and polish or at least evaluate it and post results here. PM me if interested. Ken

what should I call it... Alaskan wave jasper, Alaskan lava jasper, or something else? I need some ideas..
I'm hoping to find a lot of it tomorrow along with rhyolite agate and other stuff.
There are a few different types of ash that i'll cut and put pictures of... one other is less common and still looks this amazing almost.

Post a picture of what you have and say you have some of it for sale. Pretty sure that someone way above your pay grade has already figured out what it is and given it a name. Only thing you know for sure is that it's from Alaska. If you want to name something, get a goldfish. I'd go with Fred there too.

Would I cut a rock 5 x 7 for $10? Only for a friend or a one time get started act for a stranger. I can drink $3 worth of beer during that one cut - profits or fun. We all must decide. Tom

Tom you would charge more for the slab that is your rock? I know that for cutting the rates others charge are a lot higher, however for selling slabs one would never get that cost.

Well I have to cancel my trip plan because someone is being an (insert word here). not worth probably getting thrown out of my house. So I guess i'll be like most teenagers playing videogames and watching tv on the nicest day a guy could ask for.
Ken, Since I know I won't have any larger samples for a while i'll have to cut that one I guess.
I'm not sure when the next time i'm able to go will be and I probably won't have access to an atv ether so what I bring back might be minimul... also can't cross the river so it might not even be worth going.

Do something productive or ask if there is something around the house that needs doing. Might help get you out of the dog house. Weren't you moving out a few months back? Don't you have a job? such drama!

Don't you have a job? such drama! I have a job, work 5 days a week. The reason I was forced to quit for whe whole day is because he thinks I work harder just to get rocks and don't want to help around thr house... he wanted me to mow the lawn which took 30 min and now I have the rest of the day wasted because he doesn't want me to go. i'm moving out in july officially. Next weekend he is not home so I am going next weekend.. hopefully have access to an atv. I don't want to go by myself because if something happens, noone is around... but if I must I will go ether way. the only thing that will stop me will be thunderstorms if there are any.

I'd love some of that second rock too. If al the rocks are like that and don't undercut, boy you gonna have some money piling into your bank account. With an atv I hope you're pulling a cart filled with those rocks!

With an atv I hope you're pulling a cart filled with those rocks! can't get a trailer full there in one go (I think) probably in the mountians but i'd be after the 100 lb geodes. with tremendous luck i'll get in that area this year. The hard ash doesn't undercut from what ive seen, the softer stuff may but i'll have to try it. Unless something comes up I should be slabbing the rock and the other ones (softer ones) I have along with other stuff.

Just cut the large one, looks very similar to the one that was already cut. I also cut the more poris stuff and it still looks decent.
The slabs are still draining, i'll pick em probably on Thursday and put up some pics.
From the cabs I have seenm y co-worker make... even the lower grade material turns out decent cabs.... also the colors vary with red/ orange / yellow.. maybe green. those are the 3 colors of jasper that is commonly found (excluding brown which is harder to find)
