I was out cutting rock most of the day, under my carport...We have a lot of flowers in our yard,so I'm use to seeing bees and Humming birds around-but yesterday this guy showed up (big as my hand) and was getting his fill of the flowers too..

Did she flutter by? The tail end looks more like a moth though. Jim

Elizabeth plants things that attract nectar feeders like hummers, butterflies and honey bees. She knows if she can lure me outside to watch them eventually my ADHD will take over and I'll begin to work on something, at least for a little while.

With me, I get bored sooner than later, can't stick with one thing for very long.... Oh, look! A chicken! Can ya say easily distracted?
Great butterfly, Mike! We have something similar here in SoCal, maybe the same species? But you just don't see the swallowtails as often as you used to. That one looks like a Papilio rutulus, or Western Tiger Swallowtail.
Sure is one ugly caterpillar:
Nice find!

Billy, that's a Cecropia Moth, (Hyalophora cecropia). The large antennas identify it as a male. It's a member of the giant silk moth family.
Beautiful! I don't think we have those in So Cal, least I haven't seen any. Jean

We had a lot of Yellow Swallowtails in Michigan. We had Parsley planted in our garden and there were always a lot of the caterpillars munchin away on it. When my mom and I would work in the garden we would always stop by the parsley patch and see who could spot the most, they blend in perfectly with the plants !

Got something roughly bumble bee sized in the upper lip once, felt like I got punched and ended up with a nice fat lip.

Jean, You do have a Cecropia in So Calif but it's not seen as often as the Polyphemus. It's the Ceanothus Cecropia Moth, Hyalophora euryalus. We had them in our yard when we lived in Ojai as we had a huge Ceanothus in the back.
Few pesticides are in use in this part of Texas so Swallowtail and other butterflies abound. In our yard we get, Pipevine, Spicebush, Giant, Black, Tiger, and Four-tailed Swallowtails. of course, my wife has a huge number of food plants for many butterflies planted all over the yard. Main problem we have is the Giant Red Polistes wasp which is a caterpillar hunter and often decimates the caterpillars. Not to mention their sting is like being it with a dang hammer....Mel

Can't quite put my finger on it, but something about that pic bugs me gorgeous Swallowtail! We usually have a few Luna moths hatch out here and hang around the carport until the wings dry and they take flight.

Heard a high pitch buzzing as the sun was going down and found a large group of blooming cannas were being drained of their nectar by hummingbird moths. One late summer. They stayed there till it was about dark. A strange occurrence, the speed and loudness of the buzzing sound. Must have been a hundred of them. Never seen them before or after. Probably because they seemed to feed as the sun goes down.
