Andy, I just wanted to thank you for starting this message board. I am a 49 yr old Mom with 7 yr old twin girls and my husband is not overly interested in the tumbling like we are. My Dad gave me a mini-sonic tumbler 2 weeks ago that he had for years. We have collected rocks since I was a child on vacations. We have buckets of rocks, mostly quartz, agates and carnelians and some citrine. My dad can't remember all the specifics about tumbling and we had no where to go to ask all our questions. This message board is a dream come true for us. In Lake Tahoe yesterday, my daughters found some real beauties and they can't wait to see them polished. Everyday they want to see what the message board has to say so they can learn. Thank you again for taking your time to coordinate this message board for all of us that love tumbling rocks.

Count me in also "Thank You" this has helped me out being able to share ideas and ask questions..this is a pretty esoteric hobby and it is hard to find someone else whos shares your intrests.

Hi Mom with twins, I also love this board and web site. I started tumbling recently when a friend gave me a Lortone that her late husband had used. My 8-year-old daughter and I always pick up rocks. I've been reading this board for a long time and tried my first tumble load with a mix of beach rocks from the Malibu coast. It did not work, I think because I mixed rocks of different hardnesses. Maybe I overloaded it and/or put in some junky rocks with fractures. Some of the prettier translucent rocks developed a white opaque coating. So I'm going to resort them into smaller batches and start again and use plastic pellets or something to provide some cushioning. Has anyone tried just breaking up styrofoam instead of buying plastic pellets? We get so much styrofoam as packing in stuff at work that I could just throw it away after each batch and not mess with trying to clean it.

I'm pretty sure the grit would eat the styrofoam for breakfast so to speak....but it might be an experiement to try...
