Those are gorgeous birds. (BTW it is a blue grosbeak not an indigo bunting. You can tell by the brown wing bars.)

I've never heard of a blue grosbeak, only evening and rose breasted. Could you please ask your wife to get a picture of the blue grosbeak and an evening grosbeak together? panamark and I would enjoy the maize and blue color combination. Really cool picture.

Around here, we'd just say, "Look! There's a blue bird!". That would be opposed to a black one, or a red one.
We get robins, doves and pigeons overhead, junkos, and some little beige, brown and black birds. Wrens? Now and then we get a bright yellow bird, though it is rare.

Very nice. Like Jugglerguy in MI, we get the evening and rose breasted varieties in the Maritimes. At first glance (or without the glasses on) it can be confused with the indigo bunting, but offers up more colour. Your wife is capturing some nice images with that new camera. She may take over on the rock photos if you're not careful.
Darryl.

Yes Rob, I will mention your request. I just did. She said "yea, good luck. the rose breasted has already left". Yes Darryl she and her fancy camera may well bump me out of the saddle.
She says the blue grosbeak is uncommon. The Indigo Buntings have eluded her. They are at the feeder shortly and in the morning, and very shy.

Did the blue one taste different from the yellow one? Wife is proficient w/little .22 Baretta auto. Song birds protected. Proceed w/caution. She even made me set a coon trap next to the feeding station, caught 3 last week. They were opening her galv trash can and getting all the birddy food out of it.

Cheers Sounds like you have the whole gambit Andy. Will send some of these your way. Book says they are uncommon... Wife says to listen for their call. She says she hears them more than seeing them. Holy cow, she just let me listen to the call on the laptop and he is answering back outside. Laptop bird call, go figure.

My wife went on hike with a local ranger who had an app on his phone with bird calls to try to bring them in closer/get them to respond. She said it worked. Surely that will be outlawed soon.... Love the blue, thanks for sharing. Cheers

Got some pretty birds in your area James..... Been putting out a wide variety of seed. seems to be making a difference Michael. Give away free food, and they will come. At least the songbirds are pretty to listen to and look at. I am so fed up with the over abundance of ravens. They are killing and eating all my alligator lizards!!! Make them stop! I think the state needs to put a bounty on them. In the desert, they kill the desert tortoise hatchlings. Biggest threat to tortoise's existence.
Lot's of websites have bird call nowadays. Most times I will know that I have orioles in my yard only when I hear them. Wonder if there is a way to imbed these, so you don't have to get dragged to the Audubon site? Anyway, here they are.

And Andy mentioned you can upload them to a cell phone. He mentioned it may be outlawed. It is illegal to use electronic calls for most game animals. Most introduced species like coyote is allowed here. Surprised at how telling the calls were on those migrating song birds. You may not see them but you can sure hear them.

I have the same experience this time of the year with the crossbills. I hear them moving thru my yard but they dont stop and hang out....in the fall they hit our feeders. Goldfinches have waned off, I am guessing they must be on the nest. We had evening grossbeaks at the feeder yesterday... cheers
