So my buddies and I were hunting in a dry creek bed in Southern Idaho last summer and I picked up anything that looked like it had some agatey goodness going on in it. This particular piece seemed to me like some opalized wood branches had been swallowed up by liquid agate and frozen in time. Yes, I'm just making stuff up...just have some fun! Anyway, I've struggled with how best to find out more of this particular rock and finally decided to give it the saw treatment. Here is a shot of the original whole piece. It looks to me like some of the white areas are cross-sections of branches and they appear all over this rock at different angles. Seriously though, if you have knowledge of what this appears to be, or of actual formation theories for this specimen please share! Here is the inside of the end cut. First pic with some oil and a little dark in the garage. The second is a little drier with better lighting. I'm sticking with calling this pet wood for now. If it turns out more interesting as the cutting goes I will post some additional pictures. Thanks all! ~Roland

My best guess is that it is what Mel and others call shrink wood. The wood decomposed, cracks formed, parts of it agatized and other parts (spaces) did so at a later time with other contaminants present causing those distinct colors. Its an unusual piece or (heaven forbid)we are totally wrong. Tom

Looks like an evil sorcerer casting a spell to me. I'd polish that end nub & keep it as is. Love rocks that show a picture.

OMG, that is totally a scene from The Sorcerers Apprentice... when Mickey Mouse puts on the hat and is commanding all the broomsticks...

That's Awesome jakesrocks! I knew I could count on you folks to find some images and I love the one you've "conjured" for me. Perfect!!! I wonder about something like petrified bog because it does seem like tree material mixed in some other medium. I found a post on another site from a few years back where the author describes this exact type of rock close to the area I found this. But does bog wood always have green in it?? ~Roland

Kinda looks like brown and tan paint being splashed around.

That is cool. I didn't see the image at first but when I looked back at it the sorcerer popped out at me. Very cool indeed.

And this would be the other end of this piece! But now I don't know if I should keep the big hunk with both ends polished or if I should cut some slabs?!? Its not exactly large enough to make two bookends out of, (approx 6"x5"x5"). Ideas? Suggestions? ~Roland

I'd keep & polish the sorcerer end & display it as is. You'll never find a piece with that image in it again. Slab the other half, checking each cut for pictures.
Oh by the way, I see 2 faces in the other half.

You could cut one end at an angle and make a nice stand up. I think it will look awesome polished.

WOO HOO, turn that one 90 deg to the right, and you have another wizard. Polish both ends. Trim the bottom so they'll stand up and you've got 2 wizards to display.
