Hi all, I'm working in a vary small town NW of Helena called Augusta. This area is only known to have fossils which don't really trip my trigger so no rockhounding opportunities for me here. I had the day off so decided to take a scenic drive. The area is called the Sun River Wildlife Management Area and the Sun River Canyon. It isn't a big place but it is scenic. Augusta sits at the edge of the Bob Marshall Wilderness area which is often referred to here as the Rocky Mountain Front. I snapped a few pictures so thought I'd share on here. The area is also considered part of the Lewis and Clark National Forest. There is a small reservoir called Willow Creek before you get to the canyon and I couldn't resist letting Gypsy play in the water. The Sun River The river has a dam that regulates the water for irrigation and creates a reservoir which is popular for boating and fishing. View of the reservoir from an overlook area. He is hard to see but I don't have a good telephoto on my camera and he was easily startled and flew off before I could get a good pic but there were a lot of Western Meadowlarks in the area as well as Mountain Bluebirds (they were even more photo shy). I'm not sure what kind of bird this is but there were about 5 or six of them in this same area. Sorry about the cruddy picture but they were camera shy too. After about a 40 mile drive (there and back), Gypsy and I headed back to town. Yep it's sure busy on a saturday...lol. It was a nice day, sunny, in the 70's so it was nice to get out in nature for a bit.

Fossils don't trip your trigger ? Dang, I'd love to check that area out.
The mystery bird appears to be a yellow headed blackbird.

Nice pics and quik-trip report, Diane! With that terrier coat of hers, Gypsy looks like a drowned rat, lol! I didna know she liked water, either. It was a nice day, sunny, in the 70's so it was nice to get out in nature for a bit. This is the small town you are working in right now? Looks like it is in the 1970's, lol. Also liked the reservoir pic from the overlook area. Love the wide open spaces. Thanks for the show.

Gypsy loves playing in the water. My mom even has a small doggy pool for her to play in when we're down there. Yes, I agree she does look like a drown rat...lol. Yes, that is the town I'm working in right now, at least it's the main street. There are at least three bars so it's practically a metropolis...lol. Don, I thought that's what it might be but it seemed like the body of the bird is more gray or brown than black so I didn't know for sure.

Don, it could be a yellow headed blackbird although it was more like a yellow headed gray bird. The area near here (Choteau) is famous for dinosaur fossils. There is even a dinosaur trail: dinosaur trail Montana They frown upon collecting here.

Diane, I'll bet if you got hold of Mike/fossilman, he could tell you where it's legal to hunt around there. Another who could tell you is Bob/mtmadman, tho he doesn't get on here often.

Awesome zone Diane! We packed 20+ miles up the north fork of the Sun River last year, departed from the dam. Awesome scenery and great fishing. The dam for the Gibson Reservoir was actually the testing ground for the design-build method used on the Hoover Dam. Interesting read for anyone interested: link...And I do believe Don nailed the bird ID with the yellow headed blackbird. Cheers
