I will guarantee that he picks out the premium stuff out and sells it to Tom Harmon or someone else at a much higher price.

I guess I won't know until I cut into them what the insides look like. Here's a couple shots I just snapped of the rough. I cherry picked through his pile and only picked out ones that looked like that might have some pattern in them. It looks like decent rough to me, but I'm pretty new to this and don't know how to judge it yet. Some close ups

I don't have the opportunity to go to large rock shows or rock shops in Montana. Most of the rock I purchased over the years has been on ebay. Most of my better material was purchased years ago. I'm very picky and won't get into bidding wars over material I like. 80% of the Montana slabs I see on ebay don't meet my standards and the rest will probably sell for more than I am willing to pay. I bought rough on ebay with mixed results in the last few years. Every so often I have to buy on trust and the seller said the material he would send is better than what he would put on ebay. Nothing I've seen from the box makes me say 'wow', but it is better than I've got previously.
I'll be spending some time cutting to find out what I have and time is something I have plenty of now. Cutting rough is a lot of fun like unwrapping presents.

I particularly like the front row 2nd pic 3rd from the left.
From what I can see, there is none of 20 dollar/lb stuff there.
That does not mean it isn't good though.
I see a couple that may have a small chance of iris.

What do you look for in the rough that indicates it is good material?

OK, second pic.
First row, 1 and 2 from left. See the junk quartz in the center? If cut right and if the rock is just right, there is a small chance that there might be a little bit of iris there.
3rd one, it has the opal in the center and the dark orange colors. I love that stuff to tumble. My favorite MT came from a chunk like that.
Back row left, I would be enthusiastic about that one. See the dark middle? That might be really nice. Before you cut it, take a good flashlight and candle it.

My only Montana so far is this slab I bought at the Denver show for one dollah($1)!! I don't know much about them but this caught my eye as a beautiful mountain scene. I love it! If anyone on here is thinking about doing some selling or trading, I am interested. ~Roland

I have one Iris so far,out of 100's of cuts..LOL Montana agate goes for $12.00 a pound here, not worth it....I have a seller I buy from for $4.50 a pound (from Montana)and have to buy 30 pounds at a time,it's all top grade and totally rough..........Fist size and bigger.. Those .50 cents a pound are a deal, because most of the small stuff I see going for $1.25-$2.25 a pound......... When I visit home in Montana,I hunt the Yellowstone River myself for all kinds of goodies, plus what my Nephew sends me one or twice a year-so I'm happy.............. Roland-when I start selling or horsetrading,I will give you a holler..................Thumbs up

Some nice montana's there fossilman, do you have any pictures of the rough before they were cut? I'm curious to see the difference on the outside before cutting.

Many Montana's will throw a guy, thinking he knows what is inside, but fools ya' after its cut.....I think I still have some rough halves laying around somewhere....

I'm pretty much done cutting the slabs and posted most of what I cut. There is one large piece worth cutting but the scenes aren't anything special. I could cut it and sell the slabs on ebay. There is about 1-2 pounds that isn't particularly interesting and dark.
I paid $100 plus shipping for a MFRB that weighed around 25 pounds and I am very pleased with the material. If someone is interested in buying some from the seller, I can check with him and email the info. He told me will have even better stuff at the end of the summer. If there is interest, I would be willing to buy and sub divide the box and post selections based on what I see. I would break up the entire box and not put anything aside.
