These are a few specimens from a recent trip to Amethyst Cove. The obvious reason for going there is Amethyst, but there is also an abundance of Zeolites and Jasper that erode from the cliffs. I didn’t find any prized specimens of deep purple Amethyst, but did find a few nice hand sized specimens of smaller crystal with a faint blush of Amethyst. Amethyst on Chalcedony – Much of the Amethyst here forms on a rind of Chalcedony. Amethyst in Chalcedony Nodule – Sometimes the Amethyst form the inner lining of a Chalcedony nodule. Amethyst on Chalcedony Amethyst in Chalcedony Nodule – Much of the Chalcedony has a pitted appearance where the softer material has eroded. Amethyst Amethyst with Opal/Howlite Rind – When the Amethyst has not formed on Chalcedony, it often has a porcelain-like rind that is believed to be Opal and Howlite. Under shortwave fluorescent light, the Opal glows bright green and the Howliite glows powder blue. More on that in a future post. Amethyst with Opal/Howlite Rind Heulandite on Quartz/Chalcedony – Once you get over the initial rush of finding a piece, or two of Amethyst, you can start to look for other things. The Heulandite is a local Zeolite that forms translucent diamond shaped crystals. The Quartz is white an opaque with a few visible points. More on the Zeolites in a future post. If you missed my original location post, you can see a few of the photos here. forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/71129/rock-hounding-on-sideEnjoy the pics. Darryl.

Okay, I have a question. When does amethyst become only quartz crystal? If it has a very slight blush of color is it then amethyst? Seems to be a gray zone (no pun intended).

Purdy amethysts. I wish I could find one from my area but that chance is almost zilch.
