So I was able to find a fracture line on this beach rock and it split in half almost perfectly. I can now assume that this is gray quartzite? (I guess) But what would be the brown non-translucent rind?

Grey quartzite with iron which oxidized when exposed to water, air, and the chemistry of nature? Seriously, the rind appears to be an oxidation product and not a totally distinct substance. Tom
