A couple pics of the maters. This past weekend some of these went to Houston,Conroe,Austin,Dallas, and some to South Carolina. They get around! Usually play out around the first of July, but with all the rain and cooler temps,a little longer this year. snuffy

Gardening is in my blood-Old man had three acres of veggie garden in the 60's...My two brothers and I did the weeding and watering, plus harvest.... As a kid,it sucked-lots of work!!! Swore we would never have a garden as adults! Come to any of our homes-LOL - We all have gardens and they are nice ones-be them small like mine or big like my brother Kip's! PS: If I had more room,my would be huge too...LOL

gorgeous healthy plants. Please explain the setup for growing, are those 5 gallon pots? Do I see a hole dug between each plant, dishes with something for worm or slug control, or what is it that I am seeing? thanks!

gorgeous healthy plants. Please explain the setup for growing, are those 5 gallon pots? Do I see a hole dug between each plant, dishes with something for worm or slug control, or what is it that I am seeing? thanks! I plant my tomatoes in gallon nursery pots when I buy the plants in 6-packs from Lowe's.They grow in a hothouse until I figure danger of frost is past. When I plant them in the garden,I dig a hole with a hand post hole digger.I then push a 5 gal. pot with the bottom cut out a couple inches in the soil around them. Keeps critters off, protects agaist wind whipping the young plants, and warms the plant.A cage around them, and nothing much left to do until harvest. I bury a gallon nursery pot between the plants. This is the way I water them when necessary. Also water in the 5 gal. pots surrounding them.My beds are rounded and sloping for excess rain drainage,so this gives them a deep watering with no runoff. snuffy

thanks Snuffy, that is a great method. I am making raised beds this year, think I will try to incorporate that into the system here.. transplants can use the extra protection here when we set them out too.

Hi Snuffy, well the winter is really schizophrenic at the moment. Had a really cold run last week with night temperatures getting down to -6 centigrade at night here in Lyttelton (way colder than normal). However, today we have a warm streak and are in the mid teens during the day and well above 0 at night... Vvery confusing. The garden no like it. However it means that there is a possibility of a hounding trip this weekend. On another sad note just had to have another of my old friends put down. Poor old BOC (big orange cat) had kidney failure, he was very obnoxious, hairy and a piano in the but.... But was an earthquake refugee (anyone not in the know look up the Christchurch earthquakes 2010/11) who was abondoned so at least he got a few good years. In the mean time look after yourself. I will send you some petrified wood tumbling chips from a site here in Canterbury in the next couple of days. Keep a look out for them. Cheers Scott
