Those prices are out of line, but you could easily pay for your trip, probably including your bar tab, by selling a handful of such specimens. Finds to be proud of for sure!
uh... where exactly did you go again?

Finds to be proud of for sure! uh... where exactly did you go again? < packing > Mostly on the Withlacoochee above the Georgia line. Did go 2 miles into Florida. There is another 30 miles of river on the Florida side. Don't know much about the Florida side. I know guys that collect psuedomorphs there. I stay away from the Florida side because of Florida's laws about tampering w/water ways. And all your Fl. Libs that insist the govt buy the river frontage. Giving the govt control of the water ways. Georgia Withlacoochee bounded by timber companies and plantations that hunt, cut timber and extract resources. Amazing the difference in attitude. I do collect in Fl. but am hush about it, and have to find private land frontage. Need to organize Trail of Tears and move those guys back to NE US. Two New Jerseys next to my camp in Fl. Need hanging, both of them. Wanna make some money ?? Have dodged the Fl. law for 20 years collecting wetland plants. Quit that about 5 years ago(law of statutes ?). To old to get in that kind of trouble.

Holly cow, check out some pricing. Nice specimens, proud pricing. Funny, if I had a 30-36 inch saw I find basketball sized ones. I have a stash in a deep pool in the river of large ones. Where kap or anyone else can find them. They are booby trapped Keith....been feeding the 11 footer. www.paleodirect.com/coral1.htmThey're the only place I've ever seen a specimen similar to mine for sale. Although mine is larger and blue-er. Don't remember now but I think they got $1,200. So obviously I'm not selling mine as I could never replace it.

A big one at that. The Withlacoochee is still open to collecting keeping the prices down.

The Withlacoochee is still open to collecting keeping the prices down. *snort* been on eBay lately? Although, high asking prices doesn't equal sales. Searching completed auctions, most of the outrageously priced pieces don't sell. Like you said, proud prices. The prices on that paleodirect website are out of your mind stupid crazy and can't be used in any sane attempt to gauge value.

My grasp on geography is obv. not the best! I knew my specimen was Tampa Bay but I guess I had only a shaky idea of what the Withlacoochee was...thanks for all the information. I'm learning a lot from all the pix and discussion.

captbob is correct. Paleodirect is way inflated. at rock shows in Florida they can be picked up for a song. Those specimens on that site have been there a long time. The right to say " I bought this from paleodirect" maybe. I break them up for tumbles, $500-$1000 dollar ones by their prices.(shoot me). Fun to keep the Price Policeman( captbob) on his toes. And see his expository.

Really neat finds. I've found some small broken pieces of similar looking stuff but you're getting some really nice big intact specimens. Thanks for sharing.

Black Hills, never more than one or two in a specific spot and never near water. If I run across better examples tomorrow I'll post pics; could only find a couple in the dark and on closer inspection their similarity isn't great. But, botryoidal on a thin crust:
May be no relation. It's entirely possible I just really really wanted some pieces that look like yours ...

Conditions were favorable for botryoidal formation tims. The silicification process was caused by mineral rich water leaching thru limestone and clay. Unlike agate being formed in volcanic ash and basalt. Average silicifications being 2-50 pounds and in large quantities. Much of them partially silicified. Causing the botryoids and strange partial fills. Another common type of partial fill on the crust of coral An incomplete internal silicification that created 'pulp' Another more common form This form makes cool cabs (by rockpickerforever) Donnie cut this one
