Boulder opal is very high on my list of things to try so that's my favorite but the carnelian is very gemmy and looks great too.

Chuvk the boulder is very messy! Aside from that be careful because it's soft and that makes it easy to go past the color with a Genie. Not as bad as Spencer Idaho Opal but.... What happens is you get your shape and dome right with the color there, then on the later wheels you take so much off that you go past the color. It's very easy to make that mistake due to not only the softness but the varied softness of different areas of the dome. Also pits snd fractures just come up out of nowhere. I love opals but it's like turquoise, you gotta appreciate the cab along with its faults, pits, fractures and imperfections. I did a great one that was given to me in Quartzsite by Stoner/Ed as a preform, it's was almost solid purple fire. Susan thought the dome was to high for her silverwork so she decided to lower the dome just a tiny amount. It's now a great looking rusty brown cab with no color at all! Polish with cerium on leather and watch the heat! Hope that helps!
