Howdy folks, Been too busy with the horse program since we fired our ranch manager so I haven't done a lot of rock cutting. The wife has me cutting weeds now though so I multi-tasked and cut rocks yesterday while I fed the chiggers. Really a fine bunch of cuts this time. Here are a few pics...Mel First one is a little red one with sagenite grading into tiny poppies: Closer: Next was a fine golden plume Got four slices of this. And finally, this is an incredible example of Woodward Peanut Agate from the Rio Grande gravels. Shows how far this stuff was transported. Wish I had a ton of this but it is super rare stuff. Has a little red/black plume too. Closer:

Very nice cuts! How do you decide which way to cut the rock with Rios? If you had cut those the other way, would you still have had those patterns?
Cool looking peanut agate. Very hard to find (for sale). Saw some a month or more back from Mexico. Is it specific to that area?

Fossilman, Man while I've been weed whacking them damn chiggers have been partying in my pants. Aye God they are one miserable pest here in the Hill Country! Especially on a cool, wet , green year like this one.
Bob, I cut the nodules whichever way I can get them to hold in the vice and whichever way looks like a good pattern will show. For plume it's best to cut parallel to the top and bottom of the nodules. When I had a big saw, I put them in plaster to do so. Now that I cannot do that, I just cut them however I can. I think I do have a peanut agate slab from northern Mexico. Probably the same sort of deposit as at Woodward since plume comes from Mexico that is quite like Texas stuff too. I did find peanut at Woodward and it's famous as a location for it. To me, the Peanut I'm occasionally cutting from the Rios is very like the Woodward stuff, as is much of the plume. I have a Rio plume in the vice right now that looks very like Woodward....Mel

The peanut is pretty cool but that first one is bad a..
I was taught while in Texas to put sulfur in a cloth bag or sock then dust your pants and shoes with it before you head out to chigger land. Girl friend and I learned the hard way and it took a week to find the cure but if you sit in a tub of water with Epsom salts in it you will get instant relief and the chiggers will die. If you just have a few you can just put wet Epsom salts on it for a bit. My girl friend had over 100 from the ankles to the panty line and she/we (I only had half that many) suffered for a week trying everything but the right thing to kill them. I thought she was going to loose her mind before we got them killed. Try putting fingernail polish on over 100 red spots some time. lol And it did not work. It just pissed them off so they did their thing more and increased the itch by 2 or 3 times. If I did not have Epsom salts I would almost prefer fire ants. Jim

*googles chiggers* ... ...
Oh what the hell!! Once again I'm glad to live in the PNW, where the worst we have to deal with is a few mosquitoes and the occasional tick.

Dang, thought that was about the prettiest plume I ever saw and then WHAM, hit us with the peanut. Maybe use the slabs to smash the chiggers??
