The group kk Kurt is in on Facebook does seasonal and holiday themes as well. The thing about themes, they can over-complicate things and scare the newbies away if they get too complex. I think intarsia and carvings should be included but that intarsia or carving only contests probably wouldn't work.

The numbers are low in this contest as it is and if you add a theme I think it will cut it down more because many people do not have a lot of different or specific stones. Things like agate, jasper or green are wide enough to catch more people. Jim

A few themes for you to look at. A little help from GK. Every second month try tumbles? Gives them time to prepare.
FOSSIL MATERIALS (examples: petrified wood, limb casts, stromatolite, coral, dinosaur bone, copralite, etc... includes opalized materials such as belemnite
JADE, AMPHIBOLE GEMS, MAW SIT SIT, SERPENTINE-TYPE, GROSSULAR AND HYDROGROSSULAR
PLUME, MOSS, BANDED, FORTIFIED, & DENDRITIC AGATES including CHALCEDONY, CHRYSOPRASE, & CARNELIAN
SCENIC MATERIALS (such as picture/landscape jaspers, agates, picture opals, orbicular materials (such as ocean and poppy jaspers), dendritic jaspers, opals, and agates -- Please think of blue skies, hills, sun, trees, etc...)
HALLOWEEN CABS - ANY MATERIALS (mimetoliths or shapes - please use your spooky imagination!)
DECEMBER
(predominately) GREEN, RED, & BLUE STONES FOR THE HOLIDAY SPIRIT - ANY MATERIAL
OPTICAL PHENOMENA & EXOTIC STONES - (examples: play of color, color change/shift, asterism, iridescence, chatoyancy, materials with unusual inclusions accepted, includes different "flavors" of obsidian and slag glass, ammolite, rhodochrosite, amazonite, bytownite, spectrolite, labradorite, sunstone (with schiller, or "confetti"), moonstone (feldspars), etc... Dinosaur bone is also considered an "exotic gem." )

Thanks spiritstone, I almost didn't think of holiday types.
Whatever theme I choose (if I chose one) will be something that most if not all people, beginner or advanced, can compete in.... I am beginner so I know roughly what people can get easy access to.

I think intarsia and carvings should be included but that intarsia or carving only contests probably wouldn't work. Yep, absolutely agree. Many themes seem scary to newcomers. But, the number of participants is often limited simply by one single major factor: People take the meaning "contest" to serious. Contests held here and on FB are intended as a personal challenge rather than competing against each-other. And that factor, is very often forgotten by newbies as well as advanced members. I for one credit most of my advances, to the contests here and on other forums, as it provided a regular platform and reason to practice. But can't participate anymore, as I'm leaning now too far toward the carving side. Allow me to enter with "carved cabs" (cab outlines and flat back, with fresco-style/cameo images carved on the top), and I shall gladly be back in the game. And yes, too many people are scared by carving. So a carving-contest alone would not survive. On FB, we bundle all Lapidaries together and invite all natural materials to partake in a common theme per month, and still have problems reaching/motivating people to participate (despite of obviously playing in a much deeper pool of members)

My theme choice would be best cab that has scratches and flat spots! I specialize in these. They are sorta like a 55 mph paint job on your truck, it looks great at 55mph and a hundred yards away! Hey it ain't a limitation if you can work with it is it? LOL

People take the meaning "contest" to serious. Maybe rename it to "showcase." I like the ideas of themes. It may sound odd, but I think it helps newcomers be competative who may not have access to the absolutely stunning 'old stock' materials. We had a wine/beer tasting club for a while, had a lot of themes: by region, type, etc. But the most popular theme was always 'bring your best s**t!' Happy to see a lot of discussion on the topic.

for the name I might call it a cab display competition or something... but I think a good description of the contest will help in the actual thread.

Yep, themes are great. They force one to change direction from time to time. In the games that I partake, they also entice us to think out of the box, and hence gain new experiences with every new piece.

Kurt, that is exactly the attitude folks need to take - to consider these contests as what they are: games. Not competitions, or fights to the death. Let's all put the FUN back in it!
As for themes - good idea, but let's not overly complicate it.

Exactly! That is why I entered all the contests that I could even knowing I probably wouldn't win... I enjoy doing it. Speaking of fun maybe that should be the theme for august... but what type of fun to chose

Like on FB, upload a template design and have everyone use that design pattern. I haven't done one yet, but plan to. That way everyone can see the design and then do it. Can be as basic as a half moon, teardrop, rectangle, catfish, etc
