Hi everyone. So excited to have found this site. I am a newbie. I've had a rock polisher since I was a kid. I hadn't used it in eons. I recently began using it over the past couple years a couple times. It's a rotary and takes FOREVER to run a batch!!!!! Originally from Michigan where I was always able to find awesome rocks and fossils. Now I live in Nashville, TN. Selection here not great-or at least I haven't found it yet. I always go home to Lake Michigan in the summer and come back with some good beach stones, Petoskeys and Leland blue. I am happy to have found a place where I can come to get advice. Maybe some day I'll haves some stones that actually turn out good? ?? Thanks for all the future info, jennifer P.S embarassed by my much lacking computer skills-thanks for understanding?

Welcome from Michigan. I don't do much hunting on Lake Michigan but I did spend a few hours today in petoskey and all I really got was sunburn. Lol. Lake Huron is my normal hunting grounds. Lots of good info to be found here by just browsing old posts.

Welcome from California!
I don't tumble rocks either. Boring. Forever.
But like the results.

Welcome to the forum. You won't have much luck tumbling Petoskis. Too soft. A lot of people polish them by hand.

Welcome to the site, Jennifer. I'm from Michigan too. If you want to speed thInge up, you should consider buying a vibratory tumbler to go with your rotary. I have a Lot-O and I love it. It does all the steps after the rough step in your rotary in a day or two. It also uses almost no grit compared to a rotary tumbler. Here's a link to a recent thread about hand polishing Petoskeys. It's fun and doesn't take too long for a small one. If you're ever near Norwood (between Petoskey and Charlevoix) there is some pretty nice banded chert on the beach. It is gray or tan colored and polishes up nicely. There are also a few Petoskey stones on the beach.

You have paint rock agate, furnace slag (no need to have to go all the way to MI for blue glass), fluorite, tn agates, etc etc.
I'm from AL, so welcome neighbor.
