Wow that is some pretty stuff. Is that the jade called chromomelanite? I have some jade marked chromoflec that is from the Chromoflec Jade Mine in Washington state but it has the chrome flecks against a lighter green jade base. Is yours a different variety from the same mine?.....Mel

snowmom, haha, no I think I've finally tapped out the vast reserves of all things strange and wonderful from my neighborhood culvert unfortunately. Sabre52, I'm not entirely sure where the chromoflec mine is to be honest. I probably wasn't too far away though. This was found in the North Fork of the Stillaguamish River in Darrington where some pretty high quality jades can be found. Nephrite and jadeite. Most of the chromian flecks I find in the jade from that area are just as you described it...usually in a lighter shade of green. But this stuff's a little bit unique with the translucent black base(it's actually dark green).

That area of The Stilly even produces some excellent chromian serpentine! Really cool stuff. Some of it prettier than the jade.

Does he like rocks? Tell him to go checks out the gravel bars while he's up there!

Does he like rocks? Tell him to go checks out the gravel bars while he's up there! He does but doesn't really know what to look for. Every time he or some of his little friends try to 'help' me collect rocks I end up with a motley crew of pitted quartz and like hardened clay, lol.

lol. Jade isn't exactly the easiest stone to identify in the rough either. Still, a beautiful area to camp. Hope it stays dry for him!

Mel, I wonder if that mine is still in operation. I can't find a shred of information about it anywhere online. Would love to see your specimens if you feel like posting them.
