My son picked up some wood in a gravel pit last fall and I finally got around to checking it out. Some of it is obviously agatized but the rest of the pieces look like softer petrified wood that has not agatized. Wrong, the entire stone is as hard and polishes as good as the agate. The first one has clear agate growing up out of the top and is not like anything I have seen before although it is a bit similar to a limb cast there is no agate in the bottom and I am not sure how far down it goes. I should have photographed the bottom of this one because there is cell structure. This one is agatized on the one face but has a surprise on the back that is way cool. The cell structure on the bottom. A picture of the tree before it got knocked over and buried. It is not battery operated but you can see the size and the first one is the same size. The rock in this gravel pit has rolled quite a ways so the picture of the tree must have been exposed fairly close to the gravel pit because it looks like it is just on the surface. I have a couple more pieces but I will not know if they are cool until I open them up. One has a little bit of agate on one end but they are mostly just the plain tan all over. I live about 60 miles from the Yellowstone caldera so these stones could have been knocked down by the last blow out 635,000 years ago. Or not. Jim

Very cool, Jim. haven't seen any like that, but it's amazing the variety in the wood around here, and the different levels of preservation. Great specimans.

Sure look better on the inside than outside, nothing like a nice surprise. Like the dendrites.
