I had some recent slabs piling up on my workbench so I figured I would share a few photos before putting them in storage. All self collected Michigan stuff (except the dino bone of course) these were from my last end cut of this tight grained granite gowganda tillite unknown - found this underwater a couple weeks ago in Lake Huron. Any ideas about what it is? gowganda tillite Pudding stones Some close ups of the bone slabs Thanks for looking Chuck

That granite's awesome. Your unknown resembles bcrockhound's Flowerstone. Feldspar in basalt.

!The unknown is porphyry, sometimes called "Chinese Writing Stone". Those glaciers scoured deep. I agree sbout the fine-grained red granite – knock-out color!

The mystery rock. Looks exactly like the picture of ophitic basalt in my Lake Superior Rock Pickers Guide. When I do Google searches for that, they don't look like yours though.

Another book, Lake Superior Rocks and Minerals has basalt porphyry as @rocks2dust suggested that also looks close. Does anyone know what the difference is between porphyry and ophitic basalt is?

Thanks Jugglerguy - the description for porphyry sure sounds spot on. The book says it is common. Have you seen any? It is not something I would normally pick up but it was worth cutting a few slabs. Chuck

I have picked a few up, they are out there fairly frequently, wide range of crystal sizes, mostly with dark matrix. fun stuff!
