Greetings from Western Washington! All my life I have been obsessed with picking up and examining rocks. My mother would always have to check my pockets before washing my clothes. Now that I am getting closer to retirement age I bought myself a tumbler and I am reading anything I can on rockhounding, cabbing, and tumbling. I started my first batch around 4 weeks ago and it should be done this weekend. The first 3 stages went well, but the 4th stage when I pulled a rock to examine it had cracks and damage. Ugh I think using the ceramic and marbles in the last stage ruin my first run.. After I finish practicing with my rocks from my very rocky backyard, I will be investing in a vib and a good cabbing machine. Since I travel 3 weeks out of the month with my current position I find it relaxes me to be cutting up rocks or carving on them with a dremel on the weekends when I am home. This board has been a wealth of information for me. I think I should have read more on the final polishing stage but I learn best from making mistakes. When the weather cools a bit here I will be getting my feet wet by doing some rock hunting.

Thank you for the warm welcome. Lilacmoth I live on the king/pierce county boarder. I have a son who lives down by Stevenson on the Columbia river and I cannot wait until I can go down and visit and start hunting for rocks.

Welcome Pat! If you give us a few more details about exactly what you did with your tumble and post some pictures, we can probably help you out.
