Got a call on my cell from my mother in Arizona. She went to see my cousin. She was at a rock shop. She said she bought me a large chunck of mookite, mex. lace agate and wondered if I wanted a 4lb rock of fire agate. She said they wanted 25.00 she said it had a lot of play in it with orange and red in it. I told her that I though fire agate was mostly red with lots of play. So she passed it up. Should she have bought it? Thurday she is heading to Tuscan to hit most of the rock shops.

I don't know a thing about fire agate, but you sure are a lucky dog! Your Mom goes to rock shops and buys you rocks? How cool is that! ;D Barbara

Oh she already telling me what she wants me to make her. She went with her sister and she is buying rocks too. And guess what! She has a list of things she wants me to make. I don't know how good this is going to be. They got it made. Just buy the material and let someone else make it for free! I'll be making stuff for the next year!

Fire agate is lotsa colors, red, green, etc. Not for tumbling, though.
From what I've seen, it's pretty labor-intensive stuff to turn into a cab. You've got to basically carve down to the fire but not through it, with a Dremel, and then grind and polish all those hills and valleys. It's very irregular stuff, a lot trickier than just banging out the standard oval domed cab.

Now that I have started tumbling my mother keeps her eye out for pretty rocks even more than she did before. My entire family has always been rockhounds, especially when we would go to Colorado on family vacations. While driving if we saw an area that had piles of rock from the face of the hill or mountain that was beside the road we would stop for a stretch and look for neat rocks. Tami

I would have had her pick it up Brett, just because I can't say no to a rock, hehe. No other reason. It's funny, my mom has always been a rock lover too, it seems to be common huh? Almost looks like this may be genetic and passed on. Tamis' family, banjos' mom and grandma, my mom and grandma. Anyone else? Maybe it's just if you expose kids to the beauty of rocks, it sticks? Either way, I'm glad I caught it. Later, Don

Here too Don. Got my Dad hooked at Christmas. He is running his first load now. He calls me once a week asking all sorts of questions. HEHEHE. My sister-in-law has also taken an interest. I gave her my little toy tumbler to start with but she hasn't had a chance to start a load yet. I'll have her convinced by the end of summer!! ;D

Yep, it's an inherited disease! My mom was also a rockhound.
She bought home a big egg shaped rock - about 18" tall and 12" in diameter - she found out in the Arizona desert when she and dad were out there on vacation in the 70's. Have no idea how much that thing weighed. Made my dad and the other guy with them load it in the motorhome and drive it home to Texas. Then she painted it like Humpty Dumpty and set it out on the front porch. I think they moved two or three times and each time she made dad load that thing up and move it to the new house. Being within ear shot when he was moving that rock was enough to fry tender ears!
Everytime they went somewhere in the motorhome, she loaded up with rocks. My dad did not share her fondness of rocks and wasn't pleased when she wanted to bring every rock she found home with her.
