Picked up three specimens at the Santee swapmeet last Sunday. A gentleman was selling rocks that belong/belonged to his son. I picked up three and asked how much. He looked them over, and said $5. Deal!
First is a geode
Mostly hollow
Bob wants to cut this one
Next up, a good-sized, clear (as opposed to included) smoky quartz
For the time being, this will remain a specimen. Would make some pretty faceted stones, once I master that!
Some small garnets!
Red on fingers not blood, I just changed a magenta ink cartridge in my printer, lol (such a klutz!)
Last one for my $5 is this one, no idea what it is, but it's sure purdy. Will have to introduce it to Mr. Saw soon.
When I went to pay the man, he says, "So, I said $10, right?" He was joking. I said, no five. I think he was kicking himself, but I was happy!
This was a rock I picked up several months ago, think I paid two bucks for it. Lightning stone?
This one be cooling it's heels until I figure out what I want to do with it. Maybe somebody can get their sphere machine together sometime in this lifetime!
Anybody have any idea what the third red/green/brown brecciated rock is? Would appreciate your input! Since the collection belonged to his son, he had no idea what it was.
I picked up a small agate at Kobeys' swapmeet that same day, and have already done some work on it. Will post those pics shortly.
Thanks for looking! Jean

Thanks, guys! Not only do I have cool rocks in the wild in my part of the country, but the estate sales and swap meets are full of the captives as well. Oh Jean, you know you are killing us with your great steals finds. Thanks for sharing, those are beauts. Pana-mark! And yes, I do still hear that song that way. Well, as far as not spending a fortune on rocks goes, I have to live within my means, lol!

"spending a fortune on rocks" ha ha.
I originally told myself "this is only going to be a fun hobby. Do not spend too much." I bought a cheap saw to find out what was inside all I had collected over the years. Well 5 saws and various other things later.......
Still though, I buy old stuff and rebuild, so not counting gas for hounding (way too much $$$) I am still only into it about $ 2K So it is still all good. Now that I am retiring though, it could get worse LOL.
There is just something so dang fascinating and addictive about seeing what is inside the rocks and then crafting them into some artwork that might well outlast me.
now sit back and relax and enjoy this crazy bizarre video:

Have you been harvesting poke salad ? mature poke salad 10-12 feet tall will turn ya purple when mowing it with a tractor. It will stain polished glass. Takes 3 years to wash(wear) off.

That 2nd stone a breccia ? Rhyolite ? Whatever it is it full of color. Heinz 57 extraordinaire.
Odd spot that those garnets formed on the smokin quartz.

James, I'm well aware of what the poke berries can do to you! When in AL, we had a huge poke bush out back the barn. That stuff can really stain, it's as bad as beets.
Now, my printer is telling me I need to change the yellow cartridge, yikes! Maybe I'll put on some rubber gloves first

Takes 3 years to wash(wear) off. my kids painted themselves with poke berries one time when I was out and their father was (not) "watching" them. Purple kids for about 2 weeks, gradually fading to gray, lots of scrubbing. Lucky they didn't eat a bunch of them. I don't think I would ever have forgiven him. (still a sore spot, 25 years later).

rockpickerforever Jean, I am drooling over that breccated whatsit. The green looks a lot like the epidote/olivine we find here... do you think some of the white nodules/inclusions are amygdaloidal in nature? Its darn complex and fascinating as all get out. (love it!)

Some kind of conglomerate jasper? All very nice acquisitions. The smoky quartz is fantastic, haven't seen garnet on quartz before.

Thanks, tims. Still not sure what the colorful brecciated one is. Next time I fire up the saw, it'll be one of the first to be tickled.

Yesterday I felt like living dangerously, and changed the yellow ink cartridge in my printer without a net (no gloves). Didn't get a drop on me. So there, James!
