I just recently bought the Hi tech flat lap. I was also torn between the flat and slanted. My decision was based on what I thought would be the less messy. I like the flat lap and I am learning how to use it, my only issue is that I am sort of short and putting the flat lap on a regular height table makes my shoulders constantly being elevated. I find out after an hour of use my neck and shoulders are stiff and sore. I think the slant lap would have been better just for being able to sit for longer periods and have my shoulders in a relaxed position. I am pretty impressed with my flat lap, the only thing was I need to order the 80 grit diamond disc to do the majority of the grinding.

Based on my previous research and the comments on this thread I'm buying the HiTech Slant Lap this afternoon from the Rock Peddler in Mass.
$470 w/accessories delivered.

If I were PatRocks I would get a higher chair or a lower table to see if this helps. I have had the same problem on one of my Lortone machines with the wheels being to high and got a taller chair to solve the problem.

That's a great price if 8" unit. I have not used either but everyone tells me if you work standing up, flat is better. If you work sitting down, the slant is more comfortable. As mentioned, table/stool height makes a big difference. Pretty much everyoneth at orders Ameritool or Hi Tech from me either includes an 80 or 100 grit lap or orders one not too later. The 180 that comes with the units works fine for glass and Ameritool anyway sells 70% to glass artists.

I'm getting the 6". The 8" is less than $100 more. That's the Rock Peddler's prices at least. See how long it takes coming ground from Mass to Nor Cal coast

I think they drop ship from IL. Should take 3 working days.
